The Binary Filter

This Lino cut was designed based off of an adaptation of one of my sketchbook drawings titled ‘filter’, I believe this was one of my most successful sketchbook drawings and it developed nicely into a successful and well thought out print. I think the connections and components within the piece allude to a more mechanical and personal narrative exploring my own relationship with gender. There are a few colour variations  some with the blues and pinks more pastel and some with them much brighter, this was my first time mixing relief inks on the roller so it took a few attempts to achieve the colours I was aiming for and these are something that wouldn’t be easy to replicate. I have really enjoyed the process of turning my drawings into lino cuts however there are also some down sides such as the lack of layering as every layer is opaque, I don’t think this takes away from the work but definitely simplifies it a bit, I also found that doing a jigsaw lino cut with such small pieces and fine details was fairly tedious work and took a lot of trial and error to get right.

Jigsaw Lino Cut 1 – The Binary Filter

While cleaning up after this print, I was really enjoying the patterns and blend of colours it was creating on the glass so I placed some paper down and took a print of it in order to use later in collages
