Call For Proposals: Towner/ School of Art and Media Symposium, June 2024 Deadline 19 January 2024

This is a call for proposals for a symposium – or set of events – that will be hosted by the Towner Gallery and take place alongside Emma Stibbon’s Solo Show Melting Ice / Rising Tides in June 2024.
Once contributions are received the symposium will be shaped but, to engage with diverse audiences, could include:
• an online seminar of research presentations with a keynote speaker
• a curated screening and panel discussion in the cinema at Towner
• an activity and walk with the Sussex Wildlife Trust along Seaford, Hope Gap or Birling Gap
• an evening reception with live performance, venue tbc
• workshop(s) in the landscape
• a Climate Café, hosted by Guy Gladstone of the climate psychology alliance
Building on the themes proposed by Emma’s show, contributions may address the following themes or strands:
• Climate crisis in relation to melting ice, rising sea levels and related challenges in Sussex
• Erosion in particular with regards to coastal landscapes
• Women/ non-binary people in/ with landscape
• Framing landscape and sensorial engagements with landscape

We are applying to the School of Art and Media for funding for this programme, to cover costs such as invited speakers, drinks reception, BSL and live captioning, and travel expenses. The funding will hopefully be confirmed early in the year.

Your proposal should be a simple description (about 200-300 words) identifying:
❖the key topic(s), questions, fields of research
❖what you are intending to present and how
❖proposed duration (we commend 15 or 20min for presentations)
❖required technologies (i.e. video projector for PP presentation: keep it simple)
❖ optionally a suggestion as to which kind of event (see above) you’d like to be part of
