Photographer Research: New Idea

Looking through websites such as Lensculture I have found various photographers collections such as, Michelle Rogers Pitzl’s Soma, Balarka Brahma’s Forward Pass, Lucia Pellufo’s We are one we are two, Gianluca Mihellei’s Igor, Robert Larson’s Nowhere girl, Markus Jenemark’s Haromkring, Paul Cupido’s Tokyo Blur and Valery Melinkov’s Underground. These are all extremely dark, bleak and somewhat eerie photo collections which have given me ideas and inspiration of what, how and who I could photograph in order to create the best photos and convey what I would like to.

Change of my idea

Due to missing my flight to Poland, I have to now go back to my other initial idea which was subverting ‘A Sense of Place’ and creating a portfolio of photos which show loneliness and not having a sense of place. I will do this by using the skills I have learned in Photography so far, such as using the settings on my camera to create dark and bleak photos. I will in the next few days, take a trip to places around Brighton such as The beach, the woods and possibly the town centre and start practicing my photos. I have already got photographer inspiration from my initial ideas research but I will continue to find more to help me get more inspiration.

Practice photos: experimenting with aperature, ISO and shutter speed

I went out into Brighton and tried to simulate somewhat what I will be doing when I go to Poland and tried taking photos of the town and nature and tried to create slightly mysterious and eerie looking photos by adjusting the settings on my camera to let less light into my lens and im happy with the result I got so far. I will continue to practice before my final shoot to make sure I get the best photos possible.

Further Photographer Research

These are some photos I have collected from photographers such as Ioanna Sakellaraki, Mark Power, Eric Schuett, Morgan Silk and Alec Soth. These pictures all portray an eeriness and mystery to them, which is what I aim to portray through my photos as I will explore my own sense of place through my birth town as I haven’t been there for years and it is almost mysterious for me. Through looking at various collections of documentary photography photos of these photographers I have also gained an understanding that I will need to create a flowing aesthetic throughout all my photos as I will plan to photograph indoors and outdoors. I aim to do this by making sure that all my photos have slightly darkened lighting, make sure shapes and movement of one photo matches and or links into other photos so that they tell a story and document my sense of place which other people can interpret as a flowing progression through my experience.

A Sense Of Place: Initial ideas and Photographer Research

In the first lesson we were given the Brief, A sense of place. My initial ideas were to subvert the brief and photograph people who did not feel like they had a sense of place in society, such as documenting homelessness. I briefly looked at photographers such as Valery Melnikov’s Underground, Cesar Ordonez’s Tokyo Blur and Paul Cupido’s Searching for Mu which gave me ideas to not only photograph people but to create eerie and mysterious pictures which also convey loneliness and would accentuate the absence of a sense of place. My second idea was to still create a documentative collection, but to focus it on my own personal sense of place. I had the idea of visiting my birth town in Poland and documenting where I spent the first couple of years of my life, as it is a sense of place for me but it is also quite distant in my memories and my feeling of sense of place, as I have grown up in the UK. I envisioned myself taking these photos in places of my hometown where I remember being and I have memories of, and also exploring places I don’t remember or I have never been to create a collection of photos that convey to others what a small town in Poland looks like, and to convey and strengthen my own sense of place in my Home town. I made a mind map of photographers who inspired me and why:
