these are some of my favourite pictures I chose to edit on Lightroom CC from my night time shoot. I have decided to keep editing my photos into black and white due to my inspiration from my photographer research and I additionally feel like they create a very bleak representation of ‘A sense of place’ which is my main goal to convey. While looking at these pictures I have also thought that as well as conveying a loss of ‘A sense of place’ These photos convey a sense of limbo as well which I will further explore when taking more pictures and photographer research.
I took various photos at night in my room and in the woods near my house to see how the lighting would vary in comparison to daytime. I think the result is really good as it adds a level of mystery to my photos. The photos I took with the girl in them I experimented with long exposure by setting my camera settings to a low shutter speed and a low ISO which allowed the lens to be open for a longer amount of time and be exposed to the light and movement for a longer period of time. I really like this effect as it portrays an element of struggle and eeriness to the photos which is what I aimed to do. I also did this with some of the photos of just the trees which gave a very similar effect to the photos in ‘Tokyo Blur’ which I researched and inspired me to take similar photos which was a success.
These are a collection of photos I have chosen and edited as they were my favourite ones. I have decided to do these in black and white as I think it is best to based on my photographer research, as most of their photos were black and white and the fact that they create very boldly contrasting photos which emphasise the eeriness to them. I also think that almost ‘draining’ colour from these photos where the original ones are bright, warm and organic, creates a bleak and desolate flavour to the pictures, which could also be related to religious ideals, as through these photos being edited and being drained from their natural organic colour, these photos now represent a contradiction to how the world is meant to be seen- it documents a different version and view on nature and its semantic fields.
I have decided to start off my new idea by going to the woods near my house and taking photos with afternoon natural lighting and experimenting with the ISO, shutter speed and aperture and seeing how I could create photos that are, for example, over or under exposed to see how they would look and if i could create an interesting and eerie aesthetic that I could potentially use in my final 10 photo’s. The woods is a good location for me to start and continue to shoot pictures in as it is stereotypically seen as scary especially at night time and I can continue to convey the idea of a lack of sense of place through the woods, as the woods can be seen as quite bleak and empty and because of that it can create a sense of loneliness and depression which is what i aim to achieve with my photographs.
Looking through websites such as Lensculture I have found various photographers collections such as, Michelle Rogers Pitzl’s Soma, Balarka Brahma’s Forward Pass, Lucia Pellufo’s We are one we are two, Gianluca Mihellei’s Igor, Robert Larson’s Nowhere girl, Markus Jenemark’s Haromkring, Paul Cupido’s Tokyo Blur and Valery Melinkov’s Underground. These are all extremely dark, bleak and somewhat eerie photo collections which have given me ideas and inspiration of what, how and who I could photograph in order to create the best photos and convey what I would like to.
Due to missing my flight to Poland, I have to now go back to my other initial idea which was subverting ‘A Sense of Place’ and creating a portfolio of photos which show loneliness and not having a sense of place. I will do this by using the skills I have learned in Photography so far, such as using the settings on my camera to create dark and bleak photos. I will in the next few days, take a trip to places around Brighton such as The beach, the woods and possibly the town centre and start practicing my photos. I have already got photographer inspiration from my initial ideas research but I will continue to find more to help me get more inspiration.
