Screen Printing

On Friday (11/11/16), I took part in a screen printing workshop as part of research week. The workshop lasted all morning and it was a great experimentation session. We were given A3 card to screen print on which was a good size as there was a lot of room for experimentation and designs. I had never screen printed before and found the process easy enough once I got the hang of it and throughly enjoyed creating prints and designs.

Before going to the workshop, I decided to carry out some research on screen printing artists. I already had a type of design that I wanted to achieve, which was simple and bold. I used Pinterest as my platform to find artwork and artists. Below are some of the screen printing artists I found:

ATELIER BINGO       

 

A screenshot from their website. Atelier Bingo is Maxime Prou and Adele Fav Reau, two illustrator/ surface pattern graphic designers from France. Some of their clients are Vogue, Pull & Bear and Wanderlust.

A main concept I took from their work was their simple shapes and bold colours. I liked the way these created a more complicated piece together and screamed a ‘trendy’ Art Deco to me. I also noticed the repetition of dots used, I loved this as it made heart look like fabric.

MELANIE BOWLES 

A screenshot from her website, although mostly a textile designer, Melanie Bowels also specialises in print. Said to ‘design creative systems of participatory design for printed textiles combining traditional and digital techniques’.

A main concept I took from Bowels work was her layering of shapes and the opacity of colours. Again she used simple shapes and bold colours which I also applied to my work. Her pieces almost look like collages to me but ‘clean collages’, I wanted to keep this term in mind when creating my prints.

Above are my screen print designs. Throughout the workshop I kept in mind the artists I found but I also just wanted to experiment and see what i came out with. Overall, I was very happy with the outcomes and will defiantly be using this medium in my future work.
