Resources

Example of a PBL session (video):

This resource was created with Occupational Therapy and Nursing students alongside the media team.  It includes an edited version of an initial PBL seminar session, where the trigger is introduced and discussed and then questions are generated.  It then shows the second session where the students return to discuss what they have researched.  Finally, there is a debrief with the participants at the end which captures their reflections. The total running time is 36mins 39secs.

Some resources that are used on the BSc and MSc (pre-registration) occupational therapy courses at the University of Brighton:

  • PBL Board template – used to capture the content of the discussion during PBL seminars and generate ideas and questions to take forward to the following session.
  • Example of a trigger – this is the stimulus for one of our PBL seminars.  It does not always have to be a document, however.  It could take the form of a video, object, or even a service user.
  • Example of ground rules – it is important for the students to set ground rules in the very first session.  These should be referred to regularly and also reviewed or amended as needed.

Q&A with Professor Gaynor Sadlo  (October 2023)

This is a recording of a question and answer session with Gaynor which took place during the Collaborative Learning Group Meeting on Wednesday 4th October.

Copy of Session Notes

Professor Sadlo previously delivered teaching sessions to the Brighton and Sussex Medical School, where she introduced the theory and practice of PBL to the students.  Here is a copy of the session notes that she used to support the session: PBL Session for Med School – Gaynor Sadlo (2023).

This resource will be helpful if you are new to using PBL as an approach to teaching and learning or if you simply want some top tips in terms of your academic practice.
