Reflection on Team Work

Reflecting on my Digital Marketing Group Assignment

There are many different qualities that individuals have, which when they are brought together it can be the recipe for a great team.

But what is a team?

“A team is a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable.” (Harvard Business School Press 1993) This is a description which comes from The Wisdom of Teams. Our purpose being the assignment and our goal, of course was the highest grade possible.

Our first step as a team was to decide on the business that our presentation would focus on. This required our first conversation about which business we felt was suitable and we could find the most information to analyse and discuss.

We decided that this business would be Vinted, a second-hand clothes re selling website, attached below is a screenshot from the websites homepage.

After we had decided on a business, we discussed as a group what we thought was important to include in the presentation and the topics that we wanted to touch upon. We assigned which topics we would individually like to focus on so that we could be more organised whilst researching our chosen company. Of course, we all take responsibility for the project as a whole however it felt most effective to be responsible for certain sections during the research process.

Another layer of complexity was added to our assignment since we had to carry out the project remotely.  Working remotely can complicate communication with team members as it takes away the ability to have face to face conversations. It is important to encourage regular discussions and remain confident whilst working alongside one another.

I can be known to shy away and let others take control, however this assignment I threw myself in the deep end to prevent this from happening. I needed to have confidence in myself, and wanted to be proud of the effort I put in. It has been said that “Avoidance can get in the way of job advancement.” (Laura Newcomer 2016) To achieve the grades I felt I deserved, I knew I had to speak up and get involved. This confidence is something that I am motivated to transfer into my work life and will continue to work on so that it goes from strength to strength.

This group assignment taught me the importance of organisation. As we were unable to physically meet and discuss, it was vital that we made dates for certain parts to be done, and these were stuck to. If we started to fall behind on the deadlines that we had set between ourselves it would have highlighted great problems. We had to have trust in each other otherwise, the assignment would not have worked.
