Second photoshoot for AD137 – Photography and styling

This photoshoot was based and inspired around the idea of the ‘Alter Ego’. I looked into different individuals for ideas on how to portray the idea through a series of photos, looking at fashion from people like, Lady Gaga and Prince. Both Maria and i wanted to create extravagant outfits with a bold statement piece for each one.

We did not indent to do the photoshoot in black one white as the outfits we picked were bright and full of colour, however after editing them as using a setting on the camera we decided they look of a more higher quality as gave a vintage edge to them. Carrying out the photoshoot on sight instead of in a studio as it gives a better finish to each picture due to the location not being fake, gives it depth.

In my opinion some outfits worked better on camera then others. I liked the effect of the mirror and the reflection in a photo, so we used this to our advantage and used it throughout most of the pictures. We had to work with the lighting and spacing available within the store so we learnt and updated out ideas to fit. I think the black and white worked with this due to the shadows and depth it gave each photo.

Photoshoot 1

The first photoshoot for AD137 – photography and styling.

The model we used for this shoot way Rosie because of her natural look and hight. Both me and Maria took photos and styled each outfit working as a pair through the shoot to get more angles and to work at a faster pace as we were using natural light, it also meant we were able to share ideas.

For this shoot we looked into the contrast of the outfits and the background, as we chose the location of the white cliffs so the black outfit would stand out against it. We also worked with an all whit outfit on the white background of the cliffs but after working a few different placements of the model and the angel of the shoot i realised i liked the contrast of the white and the blue from the sky.

I wanted to try a few different scenery shots to see what looked best for a double page spread in a magazine editorial. I experimented with putting the model in front go the sun, some of the shots come out better than other by creating a shadow, but these ones in particular didn’t flow with the other shots or look like the quality of a magazine spread i was aiming to create.

Styling workshop – clashing pattens

This styling workshop was something i really enjoyed, it changed my ideas and plans for my final shoots as my first thoughts were to do something more simple and tailored looks where as after doing this workshop i have really enjoyed the way the bold patterns show up on camera as it goes each picture more depth and feel. The work shop allowed me to experiment with different outfits, working with different colours and styles. I Wanted to test out how many different pattens could be put together without it being over powered and lost on camera. I will defiantly be using the ideas i got from this work shop for a shoot idea.

After looking back on the photos i took there are definitely outfits that stood out to me when in the photo, this being different to what i expected. I enjoyed editing the photos, picking out my favourite few and editing the same photo with different brightness and warmths to see what worked best for the colours of the clothes and the style and feel i wanted from each to make it look more professional.

I also looked at shadows and lighting in this workshop when taking the photographs. I found a good space for shadow and use of the natural sun light, so i decided i wanted to go back to an outfit to get it within the same spacing as i really liked the feel it gave to the photos, it also gave each picture a warmth that i liked so wanted to catch as different angles and outfits.

The Vulgar: Fashion Redesigned

The second of the three exhibitions i plan to go to. The vulgar fashion was at the barbican in London, this one being the one that has inspired me within the module of styling and photography and is something I’m connecting and using as my research for inspiration. I really liked the idea and view on fashion as ‘vulgar’ from some individuals perspectives, where as there are collections and designers i have really enjoyed.

I made notes of specific collections i liked best and researched into all the pieces and designers and i have selected a few to put into my sketchbook for refecneces and ideas. The two collections that i was drawn to was a collection i remember seeing launch, The Chanel shopping centre and the other was Alessandro Michele for Gucci collection. I liked the bold patterns used and the colours this linking and helping me with the pattens work shop that i did later on in the week.

The idea of vulgar fashion really interested me and i wanted to use this within my sketchbook, this being why i have chosen to use clashing pattens within a shoot for experimentation. The bold patterns is something that i didn’t think i would lean towards, so the workshop really helped me with seeing how to work with them correctly to make it look classy and professional on the camera.

Work shop – Styling

STYLING WORK SHOP

This work shop for styling has been my favourite one so far. Creating concept boards beforehand for inspiration i decided to choose the theme/story of uni sex or gender neutral fashion. I looked into collections from Tom Ford within the 90’s time period when he worked with Gucci and then a collection from Phoebe Philo when working with Celine. These collections gave me the idea to work more towards unisex fashion as they were based around tailored fashion, suits and classic clean cut looks both working with traditional colours.

Before the work shop i created an edit of clothes that i wanted to work with. Mainly black, grey or white to stick with the gender neutral theme but to also add my own style to it. I used the work shop time to practice angels, lighting and outfit ideas for my final ideas, using the time wisely to see what worked best for what i am trying to achieve. I want a professional look, with classy and strong images.

These are a few of my test shots. Working with different frames, angles and outfits. I now have a better understanding of how i can make then look better within a studio to get the final finish i want. I also now know what colours i want to work with and be able to put together some more intricate outfits that stand out more for the final shoot.

London Exhibition – Feminist avant-garde of the 1970’s

The Feminist avant-garde of the 1970’s exhibition in London was interesting as it was a way to see different artists perception and work. Being able to look at individuals work up close and take photography of it meant i was able to take note of new artists names and see how final pieces of work can be displayed and presented. Such as Marcella Campagnano, Lili Dujourie and suzy lake.

Looking at the films and photography through the exhibition was something i liked, because all the art work was different from each other. The exhibition guide is something i have enjoyed reading through after as its given me a better understanding of each piece of work and the artist background and idea, but its also a way for me to get a better idea of how to right up about my own work in the future.

Certain pieces of work stood out to me, i really enjoyed this exhibition and will be looking into my favourite pieces of work in more depth and each of the artists.

Editorial Ideas

Some of my editorial idea and photography.

I wanted to experiment with my angles, backgrounds and what was in the frame with each picture. I decided on having the photoshoot outside to capture the main message of the editorial being the fact the ankle boots are for perfect for everyday. I looked at my deconstructed ankle boot and a beautiful emroided ankle boot.

I then went on to use photoshop to enhance the photos and adapt them. Experimenting with different tools on the programme and what work best for each photo, to them work out what effect and style i was going to use for my editorial for it all come together.

Comparing the original and photoshopped photos was interesting as i don’t like to make pictures look ‘fake’ or to edited but more vibrant and crisp.
