Doing it my self with the PRESSIT kit. Printing onto CD stickers and putting them into black CDS

Template to use on indesign to add art work to to print onto the stickers for PRESSIT kit.

Try 5 to get the placement correct to print where needed for stickers.

A design idea. will be looking into this more over the next day to see how different ideas work once printed.

Once printed. Now to buy blank CDS to add them too to be able to see what it looks like and quality of product.

Bellow is one of the best prints on the CD. The paper above is a matt finish which didn’t have the vibrant look i wanted, it felt like ink jet paper and looked cheap. Therefore i went and got a gloss finish paper to work with the PRESSIT kit. The gloss finish looked so much cleaner and professional. I was happy printing was start to come together in a way i have pictured it.

RESEARCH FOR PRINTING PHOTOCARDS

https://www.simplytoimpress.com/custom-cards/design-58888-prev-1?option_id=18&die_cut=9&paper=&folded=0&qty=25

Doing it myself editing photos into business card rounded edge style and printing onto photo-paper. Using app COLLAGEABLE. Bellow are some of my experimentation with photo card printing. They are printed on photo paper in the style on a business card, however they do not have the finish i hoped for as you can see the two elements stuck together as i didn’t print doubled sides as i wanted both sides to be on the gloss paper. I need to figure out a way to cut they card cleaner for a higher quality finish.  For the back on the card i used TENS signature and message to the fans.

Ongoing research – will update while i find new ideas and places to print

Update after COVID 19 – no longer printing due to change in hand in.

Album photo book/inset layout idea

For the album insert/ photo book i wanted to create a basic layout so i would know what content i would need to create to fit the pages and style.

I went onto Indesign and used their stock template – Modern Design look book layout – as a base idea however this was in the square shape to fit a regular CD case. I used this to create basic ideas and carried on to create a higher number of pages and then tried to change it to a A5 size booklet as this would be what i am wanting to create for the end display.

I have used a mixture of my own photos from my trip to SouthKorea having edited them a bit and made sure to use ones what show the cultures and correct colours to work with the paired photo on ten that i have chosen. For the moment i have just used photos of Ten from the internet, I will look into using edits or own content to fill the booklet with all my own work.

My next steps will be to revisit and get feedback off others, to print to see how colours look on paper types and finding ways to fit in more of my own work in form of photos.

ADOBE layout

Square my edit – full PDF linked – CD fold out idea 1

This was a good way for me to create a sort of flat plan to base my final idea off. I got see how the images would look on each page, look at spacing, use of text and colour. Looking at what worked best together and how i could adapt and change elements for a album photo-book that flowed and showed a story and concept.

A5 layout idea – full PDF linked  – album insert A5 idea

Having gone in and adapted the flat plan to fit a A5 size booklet. Having adapted and changed images to work with concept ideas ands chosen colour scheme.

Looking at matching the photos to work best as a pair on each spread while still working as a whole. The next steps are to now look at my own photographs, graphics and illustrations to see what best fits the flat plan and album concept. I like the that i have been able to adapt and take style choses from research but keep the concept and personality of TEN running through this album book.

1st year student helper

Having been given a first year student as someone to collaborate and work with i have tried my best to think of ways to work best together with me being back in Birmingham and Farah being based in Brighton.  I made sure to ask what her areas of interest where so she was able to work with something she enjoyed. She is mainly interested in styling and photoshop so i thought this could work well as styling and photography isn’t my strongest area, so having her creating mood boards and ideas for shoots is a nice way for us both to understand the direction of the project and for her to create content she enjoys and maybe understand how something like this is done for final year project. I have also given her the chance do more admin side of things that would be found within a PR based project and the jobs that i was experiencing through interning, such as finding company for printing and model scouting.

So far we seem to be working well together. Will be helpful and interesting to get feedback from someone new and excited to get started. I will be posting about to processes of this to give good and bad points to showcase how it works for upcoming years.

UPDATE – a week later

Farah has decided to work with another final year. I think for future years students should be partnered with those who are working the field they are interested in. Its a shame i now don’t have a student to work with however if i need help i will make sure to try find another first year if any of them need to do more to pass their project.

Illustrator

For the dragon that i have placed within the album inset i wanted to make sure it was my own. So i went and took the image into Adobe illustrator and colour grabbed from the image of ten on the partner page, and drew it up with different  pink tones and brush sizes and strokes, i traced this put took away some elements and the different colours gives the images a whole new look.

Illustrations

After receiving a free illustration within my album purchase for WAYV which is one of TENS groups i was inspired to try out my own style. As i learnt how illustrator worked through the previous project and wanted to test out my new drawing tablet. To  develop  these  further i will  look  into  colour  pallets and graphics to see how they could work as posters or content within my press pack.

MY DRAWINGS OF TEN

I like the style of these illustrations. The use of colours and patch work style colouring. I think this idea works well for adding in Ten, his style and beauty into the press packs and albums without having access to photograph him. I wanted to capture his features and personality with the illustrations and i believe i have succeeded in this with this style of drawings.

Tutorial notes

After looking at the video, it comes across to slow and can loose the interest of the viewer easily. There for i need to go back and review my clips to create a faster pace video. Something Chris also pointed out was my captions being to commercial like however this video is created to go along side my album proposal for him so i aim for it to come across as a commercial piece. I will work on the captions being more personal however i do not want to footage to look like a vlog of my holiday i want it to still show Ten as an artist.

Ideas for captions.

  • London > Korean
  • Korea > London
  • 5,000 Miles
  • Billions of hearts captured
  • Smiles shared
  • The star from 3 groups
  • Moment to shine
  • Dreams coming true
  • Voices lost
  • Friendships created
  • Love
  • Adrenaline rush
  • Music transcends language
  • Moments of pure joy
  • Confidence
  • Power
  • Determination
  • Culture
  • Endless photos saved
  • Treasured collection of albums

VHS effect testing

For the film idea, i have been trying out the VHS effect. I have watched youtube tutorials on how to create this effect and i have applied it to some footage i took in Korea to see what it would look like and how long it would take to create this style of video. I though of this effect as recently Tens personal Instagram looks like he is using film camera to capture moments.

This style of effect takes a while to create and keep a steady flow that matches throughout different footage types. I would need a lot of post production time to create this style for a minute long video. I will keep trying this style and see if there are other ways to create this effect. The VHS style for me hold a sense of memories and showing something personal which i think works with the new idea of creating a love letter/montage style video to accompany my media pack.

Album art work

K-pop album art work is primarily graphic based, not many albums will include the artists face on the album cover due to the photo book included inside with all the visual content.

Having a graphic based album cover is something that i have worked on with the previous research project and carrying on through into FMP. Creating something graphic based was important to fit within the style that K-pop holds in the market today. It also helps as i am not able to photograph the idol my self and finding a way around this is something i’ve had to over come through this whole project. Trying to find ways to put across his style, personality and culture without his presence directly.

Bellow are some of my favourites and examples of graphic album covers within the recent k-pop market.

Bellow are some examples of my edits for graphic album covers for TEN.

My ideas for graphic based album cover to show case Ten as a solo artist. Making sure to include elements of his Korean, Chinese and Thai background.  Looking  at  language,  colour,  placement  and  style  to  see what  works  best.  My  next step  will  be  to  look  at  printing,  paper  types  and presentation  of  final  cover.  Its important for me to make sure the album cover is eye catching, showcases the concept and is exciting for the fans. I need to make sure it is engaging with the the target market of 18-25 and is designed to have that element of being a collectable.

The Chinese characters spell out TENS birth name in Chinese. It is also written in English characters for his Korean name with the Korean spelling above.
The red 10 next to his name is red due to this colour running through all the flags connected to TENs culture.
The main feature is the Chinese character for the number TEN, with the Korean spelling for TEN as his stage name placed next to it. Showing his placement within his Chinese group WAYV and Korean group SUPERM or NCT

FEEDBACK

Aamina – 22 Kpop fan

Like the idea of the Korean and Chinese characters as it makes it more interesting to look at, wants to show it off for others to see. It also makes for a album that is aesthetic and ready for a photo on social media such as instagram. Think the blue/grey cover is to basic and wont draw in attention.

Jess – 26 non Kpop fan

Like the red cover the best as she can see it sitting on a shelf. The red one has the best placement of graphics, has a subtle meaning behind all elements that fans will appreciate and understand while still looking polished and would still stand on out the shelf within a shop like HMV and catch her attention even if she is not a fan of TEN personally.

Sophie 21 – Kpop fan

Agrees that the blue/grey cover is too plain even though the logo is strong but it doesn’t draw her in or get her excited. Likes the idea of the gold cover because of the Korean and Chinese text as it shows all the sides of TEN but the background texture looks separate from the graphics making it look to edited where as the red cover looks complete and smooth. Likes the red as it looks rich and something she could image connecting to TEN straight away.

Email to SM Entertainment

As Ten was coming to the UK for a performance with his group SuperM, Chris encouraged me to contact SM to see if i was able to get into contact with him for my project. This is the email i sent out.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I’m writing to you to enquire the chance to interview one of your clients, during his stay in London.
I am a final year student at The University Of Brighton, studying Fashion Communications with Business studies.

For my Final project i am in the process of creating the documentation for a solo album proposal for TEN. After carrying out in depth research about the idol it has come to my attention that he has a wide global popularity from his successes within multiple groups. Many idols are known for producing solo content while working in groups and i believe creating a solo album for TEN is a great marketing opportunity to spread create interest around the newer groups of SuperM and WayV whom of which are both greatly succeeding.

Having the chance to talk to TEN or his team directly would be great help towards my research and proposal for the project. The access to rehearsals would be greatly appreciated as it would be a chance to collect visual content for the album proposal.

If you would like to see previous work please find attached a link to my website containing a portfolio of work through my time at university and a working CV.

Thank you for your time, looking to hear back from you.
Millie Dyson

Unfortunately they never got back to me. However i was able to buy a ticket into the show as i am a fan of the group. Which means i am now able to try and get some footage of TEN and some photos to use within the project which is something i did not expect to do be able to achieve. This being quite exciting to be able to carry out.
