CONCEPTS WITHIN KPOP

To start thinking about a concept behind my album launch i wanted to look into past concepts that have been used within K-pop. Each group and come back (new song / album)  hold strong references. Some concepts have taken ideas for styling and staging, some have taken story lines and some take the idea of small connections and grown and develop this to make it their  own. Showcasing the ways ideas  are used from different places to create a narrative for artists.

Examples

BTS with Dionysus –  which has connection to greek mythology

ATEEZ with Treasure  – which takes inspiration from pirates

EXO with the song Obsession – with the concept of two personalities, the idea of good and evil.

JUS2 with their album Jus2 – which is based of the senses, with each song connecting to a separate sense such as touch or taste.

TXT with their Dream album – connecting to magic and inspiration from harry potter for aesthetics

MONSTA X  with Shoot out – which is all about youth and rebellion

BTS with Boy with love  – taking reference to the film sining in the rain for staging and outfits

ACE with Savage –  which is all about taking your personality and shining. Making differences beautiful.

Bellow are some mood boards to show the connection. More are included in my sketchbook.

My idea planning for own concept

To start thinking about a concept i could carry out with the launch of the album i brain stormed different ideas. I have showcased this in my sketchbook with concept boards.  I went with ideas that have been used such as ‘Films’ and looked at different films that have strong visuals so the connection could be seen. I also looked into culture, seasons, gender and what these could include as these ideas have been touched upon before within K-pop. Seeing what concept fits for K-pop and what concepts i could carry out for this project. It was important that i connected with the concept i chose i am passionate about the idea and can express it successfully.

Bellow are my notes and first idea. More on building my concept can be seen through my sketchbook.

VIDEO – DIFFERENT by WOODZ

The music video for DIFFERENT by the artists WOODZ.

WOODZ is a Korean singer.

His birth name is Cho Seungyoun and is also in a K-pop group called UNIQ and another one called X1 but does solo work under the name WOODZ.

This music video has been my favourite one since i saw it about a year ago and i still love the production on it as much as i did the first time. This is definitely something i will refer back to when looking at film and editing for my project as i want to research in teaser footage for albums. The way of editing in this is something that i love, the split screen and range of images used really catches the viewers attention. Its has such a relaxed and intimate vibe surrounding it. Something i also loved about this video was the use and experimenting of the lighting, from the fairy lights, to strip lights to the single bulb spinning around the artists to create shadows. Lighting is something that i have really loved and appreciated and something i always pay attention to within live music or theatre shows. So i would like to look into lighting of film and photography.

I have used the editing techniques i have liked from the music video about to create short pieces using existing artists footage. I was able to play around and find out how premier pro works in more detail through this as see what i like the most.

Interpretation of Lyrics

At this point i started to struggle with what steps to do next, with help from tutorials i had to idea to look into my favourite lyrics from those i listen to and work with that as a base to start thinking about concepts to capture the moment in a photograph. This is something i enjoyed doing and will definability be a method i take with me as i struggle to create ideas for photoshoots where as with using lyrics as inspiration meant i have a variety of ideas to portray the emotions i feel and want to put across.  I however didn’t get to carry this idea out in the studio due to its available and difficulty getting a hold of clothing and models, though this is an idea i want to run with and work with a lot more when it comes to FMP as i think its something i could dive deep into and create strong concepts for photo books and album art work.

VOIX

The group had a few ideas for the magazine project. We focused on the concept being interviews with the focus on the creators making a difference. As a group we liked the idea of contrast, so we developed on this and agreed we would display contrast through the design and layout of our magazine.

For the name of the magazine we all agreed that we wanted a single word with a big impact. After discussing a few ideas and we liked the idea of VOICE as the magazine will be giving the creators and the new ideas a voice. VOICE then changed to VOIX (in french) after we had ideas of other names being in german or Spanish. We believe it makes the magazine stand out more, and strikes up questions to what it means.

Bellow is the mind map we put together in out second group meeting, to be able to put down all the groups ideas. Looking at all our indavidual roles and what we need to focus on to work as group and put all thoughts together.

Zine research

As a starting point for my zine layouts I’ve been looking at pintrest as it can get quite creative. However i decided to buy a couple of zines to get a real feel for them. I brought two on a trip to London for the exhibitions, one being called Sister and the other being Electic i chose these two as they are the size i want to make my zine in but also i really enjoyed the content. I like clean cut layout and this is what these zine offered, they work to the guidelines we have learned about layout within the workshops there for these were the best ones for me to analyse and get inspiration from.

Front covers
Background

Within the Sister zine a few of their pages were pink. I want to take this idea and use in within my zine, it makes the black text stand out and makes it more bold and interesting and bit more feminine. The 60’s is filled with bold colours and i think a colour paper zine will work well with the ideas i have.

Text

This page stood out to me as i like the simple text block in the corner of the page with so much white space around it, this being something i will adapt and use within my own zine. Something that i really liked in this page is the simple fact that the photo on the right doesn’t fill the page completely and has a thicker boarder at the top of the page. For a page like this within my zine i would look into the typography and make it stand out on the page but to make sure to compliment the picture.

Double page

The simple double page spread. It fills the page completely with a bold strong image. Nothing but the image so the eye can not be distracted. So effective it will be something i look at doing if i take a strong photograph.

I liked these two pages for the fact that there are two photos but the right hand page is smaller get for me thats the one that stands out more to me on the top image. I think this is due to the bright red background. The bottom picture is really clever as they have placed photos behind the main ones, but they have though about it as its kind of got a collage effect as it doesn’t take away the focus from the photos or overpower the eye with two much information.

Biography

Why i chose fashion communication and my ambitions within the industry.

Studying fashion communication will hopefully open up doors for me to be able to work within the fashion world. Working for companies like ZARA and YSL is something I am striving to work towards by improving my skills in the areas I enjoy such as photography or styling. Even understanding the areas of social media such as blogs as they are growing so much and are becoming just as important as magazines when promoting new lines. I have big ambitions that I’m aiming to work hard to achieve if that’s working abroad or simply being apart of fashion week. Being creative is something I greatly enjoy but I am also highly interested in business studies there for fashion communication fits me perfectly.
