To start thinking about a concept behind my album launch i wanted to look into past concepts that have been used within K-pop. Each group and come back (new song / album) hold strong references. Some concepts have taken ideas for styling and staging, some have taken story lines and some take the idea of small connections and grown and develop this to make it their own. Showcasing the ways ideas are used from different places to create a narrative for artists.
Examples
BTS with Dionysus – which has connection to greek mythology
ATEEZ with Treasure – which takes inspiration from pirates
EXO with the song Obsession – with the concept of two personalities, the idea of good and evil.
JUS2 with their album Jus2 – which is based of the senses, with each song connecting to a separate sense such as touch or taste.
TXT with their Dream album – connecting to magic and inspiration from harry potter for aesthetics
MONSTA X with Shoot out – which is all about youth and rebellion
BTS with Boy with love – taking reference to the film sining in the rain for staging and outfits
ACE with Savage – which is all about taking your personality and shining. Making differences beautiful.
Bellow are some mood boards to show the connection. More are included in my sketchbook.
My idea planning for own concept
To start thinking about a concept i could carry out with the launch of the album i brain stormed different ideas. I have showcased this in my sketchbook with concept boards. I went with ideas that have been used such as ‘Films’ and looked at different films that have strong visuals so the connection could be seen. I also looked into culture, seasons, gender and what these could include as these ideas have been touched upon before within K-pop. Seeing what concept fits for K-pop and what concepts i could carry out for this project. It was important that i connected with the concept i chose i am passionate about the idea and can express it successfully.
Bellow are my notes and first idea. More on building my concept can be seen through my sketchbook.
