illustration feedback

Whilst making TRIPT magazine, being the Graphic Designer, i’ve had to produce a lot of illustrations. One of the reasons being TRIPT’s brand in general is bold and graphic with psychedelic imagery/aesthetic and another reason being due to lockdown photoshoots have been hard to execute. My normal graphics and illustration style is really minimal, simple with muted colour palettes so this project has really pushed my out of my comfort zone as its been a completely different style of work i’ve had to produce. Over the duration of this project i’ve produced some of my favourite pieces of works, one of them being this illustration.

This is the original image for my illustration and it is by one of my favourite female gaze photographers Mayan Toledano shot for Teen VOGUE
My sketch/outline of the image which is the first step of my illustration process
The next process to fill in the outline with colours and shading
After the second process of colouring in the image i then added a background and text to that fit the aesthetic of the magazine
The double page spread in the magazine which includes this illustration

In all my illustrations i never draw on faces as i’ve always struggled with them but after i had completed this spread i had a zoom tutorial call with Chris and he said he wanted me to try. He spoke about how the magazine is so powerful and the messages behind it are so strong that having illustrations without faces could almost contradict this message. Women have gone centuries being oppressed and fighting for their rights to have their own identities that having a female with no face and identity doesn’t give of the powerful message in this spread. So after this feedback from Chris i then went on to experiment with trying to illustrate a face onto this page.

The first step to adding on the face was to add the shading around the face, lips and key features such as nose

Adding in more details to the face such as the lips, eyebrows and more definition to the nose
Adding in the eyes

This is the finished product of experimenting with drawing on a face to this illustration. After i finished i sent it back to Chris to get feedback and he was happy with this and so am i. Throughout this whole project i have pushed myself to do things i wouldn’t normally do and in doing this i feel i have produced some of my best work which i’m really proud of. In the magazine there are a lot of other illustrations i have avoided doing faces on so i after this i plan to experiment with adding in faces to all of my illustrations, further developing my skills within this skill.
