Green Utopian Runway Set

The plan i have for this future bodies project is to create miniature runway sets as i am looking at COVID and how that will change the way fashion will run in the future. Since COVID, fashion has come to a standstill and runways haven’t been able to go ahead, causing fashion designers to come up with creative ways to showcase their collections, such as JW Anderson and his show in a box collections. These sets i will be making are runway sets and it is a way for fashion runways to still be able to go ahead in this no contact world we’re living in. The sets are also made from recycled materials making them good for the environment, looking at the sustainable aspect to fashion and how big of an impact fashion has on the current climate change crisis. With these set ideas there would be less of a demand for the garments to be made as they could be digitally projected onto the sets, which in turn impacts the amount of fabrics and dye’s affecting the earth. The sets will be designed to look like dystopian futures, portraying an idilic world in which nature has regrown and is taking back over from industrial and urban landscapes.

Each set i plan to do a different colour scheme, so far i have planned to do green(earth+nature), red (fire), and blue (water+seas). I have also chosen these colours based on the WGSN trend boards and one of the main colours for season 21 is the colour quiet wave. This colour is a more mint, cooler colour of green and has a more futuristic colour story which works well with the futuristic narrative. I also want to work with bright bold “Hedonistic Brights” as these bright colours are said by WGSN to be important in this COVID world as people are retreating into bright digital coloured worlds for escapism and for these sets i am creating a whole other utopian world for escapism.

This was the inspiration board and sketch plan i made for this green runway set. The plan was to create a set with three layers to it, each one a different shade of green, with the outer-layer being cut into more of a hexagon shape and as you get closer to the back the shapes going more oval. The runway then running through the middle of the set tilted up at an angle in order to create depth with plants and bits of nature that i have collected, in between each layer.

This was the final green runway set i created, with help from Imogen. In the end i created 3 different layers, each spaced apart from each other to create depth and to be able to add in plants and bits of nature. At the back imogen created an illustration which we then put tracing paper over the back in order to be able to light it up from the back and this is also where the runway come out from. To light up the whole set i put a lightbox underneath and then had a ring light from the front as well as my ipad lighting it up from the back. Towards the end of the shoot i added in a model to the runway that i had found in a VOGUE magazine in order to show the depth in the set. We also experimented with projecting actual models and runway looks onto the set but this didn’t look as good because it was too dark to see the set itself. From here i also want to try and experiment with digitally creating a model to then add in to the set to see how that would look.
