After Emma’s 3D modeling workshop I want to explore more into the idea of mini set making as a way to convey the idea of an exhibition space. For this workshop I made my mini-set using a cardboard box, tinfoil, egg carton boxes as well as a hot glue gun and green wool. I used the tinfoil to cover the box as I wanted this to represent the futuristic aspect I’ve been looking into. To then bring in the idea of us regressing back to nature and nature taking back over I used the green wools to create planters around the mock exhibition space. In the middle I added a stick figure and this was to represent the idea I have of putting a hologram model in the middle of the space, which in COVID times is a practical solution to not having models and creating a non-contact space.
The final mini-set i made alongside the different materials i used to get this final pieceI recently attended a live talk with artist and designer Camille Walala with NOW gallery in which she talked about her work, did a walk-through of her design studio and spoke about her approach when it comes to her installations and exhibition spaces. Walala is known for her large scale, vividly colourful installations in public spaces, incorporating a mixture of murals, 3D installations, street art and set design, all-encompassing her bold, bright and colourful style with geometric shapes. In the talk Walala spoke about how before making any of her installations she will make a miniature set so she is then able to get a sense of what the space would look like.
Salmiana
Salmiana is a design studio created in 2014, Mexico, they are a brand that creates environments and spaces with a focus on sustainability. Their aim is to create an experience of nature in the urban environment, mixing flowers and plants with urban materials such as mirrors and warehouses. These images specifically are the ones i was most inspired by. For this project by Salmiana they created a variation of different 3D sets, the box shape for the set being made from mirrors so it reflects what inside the box, creating a distorted illusion. In each set there a variety of different plants and flowers, creating a different colour scheme for each. In putting each 3D set into a warehouse type space it really emphasises the idea of the natural environment mixing with urban environments.
Imogen Donegan
Imogen Donegan is my housemate and is a student on the illustration course at Brighton uni. For her projects she has made a lot of 3D spaces and set designs so for this project she’s going to help me as i have never worked with set design before and i want to try and collaborate our styles together to create a 3D fashion space somehow. She uses a mixture of digital, 3D design and illustration to make her different sets, using
My aim is to mix technology and nature and I plan to do this by using a mixture of both 3D set design and found objects such as plants and twigs with technology such as projections or holograms and just generally experiment with different technology options.
