Sustainability

In the last decade, sustainability in fashion has become more of a core value within brands rather than a trend. The fashion industry is second in regard to the amount of damage it causes to our planet, contributing over 8% of all greenhouses gases and it is predicted by 2050 the industry will be responsible for a quarter of the worlds carbon budget. Now more than ever it is so important for the industry to come up with new, innovative ways to help the environment.

Although my sub brand is a make-up brand, my main priority was still to make each product sustainable. I started off by researching different ways and different products that were eco-friendly and that could be used for my packaging and branding. For the lipsticks I want to use biodegradable resin and to put pressed flowers within that resin to stay with the flower/spring theme. The bioresin is better for the environment as its made from renewable sugar cane rather than petrolewin. I also plan for the lipsticks to come in recyclable tubes. I researched a company called Chicago Paper and Can company that manufacture tubes that are 100% paperboard packaging made from 80% recycled materials. The idea for the eyeshadow palette is for that also to be made from bioresin and to have the same design with the pressed flowers. It will also be reusable to save waste which also makes it customizable as you can also purchase single shades and make your own palette. I have decided to do a cheaper version too, in order to accompany my teen/young adult target audience. This palette I plan for it to be made from cardboard, meaning it will be completely recyclable and will be reusable as well. I think that it is important to change the way we are making products today and to research different, more sustainable ways to package things in order for the environment to be healthy.
