This Easter break I am planning on going home for a week so I can really focus on my work and also my project is predominately based around my Grandad and being at home. While I am home since changing the whole concept of my video and now doing just an interview instead of a short film music video I am going to begin properly planning all the changes I am making. To begin with I am going to establish how I am going to approach the interview with my grandad as i have to take into account that it will be harder for him to understand what is going on due to his dementia. So as a precaution I have been planning the most concise and effective way I can go around this by keeping things simple so that the video and interview can speak for itself without too much editing and ideas confusing it.
I have decided that I am going to gather clothing pieces myself from around the house of his that I can then lay put into a simple timeline for him to talk about each stage. For example, I will have the ‘timeline’ wardrobe begin with a piece of clothing he had from his childhood such as his wool jumper his Mum knitted for him as a young boy. I am very fortunate with this project (which was where I got the inspiration from in the first place) that my grandad has so much rich material and resources he has allowed me to help myself to and use to make my project as authentic as possible. He has always kept his things over the years so this is really helpful such as all the photographs over the years and his clothing which he has never thrown out.
29/03/24- Today I started this process by gathering all of my grandads clothing (with permission) laying them out in chronological order. As I did so with each on a hanger, I then thought of the idea of finding photographs that correlate with the clothing piece. Not only will this visually look good but it will help my grandad when talking about the clothing item in the video to have a visual outlet to refer to and jog his memory. It also links into my research I have done from multiple media sources such as videos and articles from JSTOR that taught me about the connection between the arts and dementia and how the importance of them can often be overlooked. Part of my project is exploring how dementia , photography and fabric have such strong attachments to the memories attached with them and within my video It will be interesting to explore how my Grandad responds to being told about a memory behind the clothing piece he is holding and instead being shown a photograph of him wearing it or an activity related to it.
