The 12 Photos

The Final Product: stash.

stash. has been installed into a bedroom environment, so the space has been manipulated in order to achieve the desired aesthetic (see tech. ‘Communication Assets’ page for the set design).

The Rope

Close up of the natural hemp rope being used.

12mm natural hemp rope is being used in stash. as it is strong, durable and trustworthy. The user will have a good grasp when pulling the rope due to its obvious notches, thickness and grippy texture. Also, the rope looks aesthetically dependable, meaning that users and customers have immediate trust in it. This sense of trust is paramount when using stash. Plus, Natural Hemp rope is a material that users and customers will relate to as they have seen this being used on large vessels to hoist or retain heavy objects. This means that they immediately assume the rope’s secure and trustworthy characteristics.

The Ceiling Bracket

Close up of the high grade steel ceiling bracket being used.

The high grade steel ceiling brackets are being used to secure the pulley wheels to the ceiling within the coffee shop (the intended installation location). The brackets are specified to hold 100kg each, the equivalent of an average over-weight male in the UK, as outlined in the technical specification. This is in case the product is misused by users, allowing for large weight to be applied to the product without it breaking. In addition, they have been chosen because they have an industrial, reliable and heavy duty aesthetic. The visible welds, steel bolts and the black colour create this purposeful object that users and customers will instantly trust. In addition, these brackets have been chosen because they are easy to install. This ease of installation is important because the customers are able to install the product themselves.

The Knot and Carabiner

Close up of the knot and carabiner.

Together, the noose knot and galvanised steel carabiner provide visual symmetry. They both take similar forms (in terms of size), allowing for the creation of one uniform piece. This robust, designed knot provokes trust and security. This noose knot is extremely difficult to undo by hand, and the carabiner looks and feels secure as it is made from galvanised steel. These characteristics mean that users feel they can rely on the attachment. The carabiner also has a screw lock mechanism which provides a further sense of trust and security as the user fastens this themselves. Fastening the carabiner relieves user anxiety because it is a slow process, meaning that the user knows that a potential thief has to go through the same slow process to retrieve the things.

The Pulley Wheel

Close up of one of the two pulley wheels.

The stainless steel pulley wheels enforce the industrial aesthetic and are specified to hold well over the weight required. They also look heavy duty, meaning that the user and customer immediately trust its ability and function. These pulley wheels squeak when in use, providing an additional alarm to alert the coffee shop community that the product is being used. This, as well as the exaggerated movement of using the product, will draw the eye of the community to stash., therefore, providing security.

Customised Pulley Wheel

stash. customers have the option to brand their pulley wheels with their coffee shop name when purchasing the product. This customisation makes the product more personal and relational, creating a secure relationship between customer and product. Due to the height and location of these pulley wheels, this branding will not be readable from the user’s perspective, but this is not the intention. This personal branding and customisation is for the customer.

Coffee Shop with stash. Installation

An Adobe Photoshop render of stash. installed within a coffee shop environment.

Adobe Photoshop has been used to install stash. into the intended coffee shop environment. This allowed the designer to play with the scale of the product and the defined location that it will take within the coffee shop. This Photoshop render allows for the visualisation of how the product looks and how it could be interpreted in a real life scenario.

Creating Atmosphere: Collage 1

A collaged scene created in Adobe Photoshop.

This collage depicts a strong atmosphere that stash. is intended to create. The background has been dulled down, making the bags the spectacle. Some users are looking up at the bags, expressing the obvious nature of using stash. The exaggerated bodily movement of using the product is also expressed within this collage. This exaggerated movement is catching the eye of the coffee shop community, making community the security. This collage communicates how the communal security works.

Creating Atmosphere: Collage 2

A collaged scene created in Adobe Photoshop.

This collage has been created within a Dutch design inspired coffee shop in order to put the product into context. It also communicates the product’s Dutch influence and achieves the strong atmospheric feel that stash. is intended to create. This collage allows for the playful design to be exaggerated, whilst creating a sense of emotional reality and relationality. The people are black and white in order to draw the attention away from the user and on to the bag (the spectacle). This means that eye is immediately drawn to the bag. This collage shows how stash. could be interpreted by users when installed into the most persuasive location.

Brand Identity

stash. product logo.

stash. logo has been designed in order to give the product an identity and it helps create a realistic product brand that customers trust. The design communicates the product’s function and characteristics, by using an obvious, sturdy font inside a secure box. stash. is a packaged item made up of existing parts, and this product identity neatly ties all of these elements together in order to create one professional, genuine product. This branding associates the product with quality. This is paramount because the product will be installed above people’s heads, meaning that the customer must trust it.

stash. Packaging

The single stash. product packaging (open).

stash. packaging is a professionally packaged product that customer’s will trust. This packaging encases all of the existing parts, it expresses the product’s function and follows the stash. brand colour scheme. This adds value to the product as it makes the product more genuine and realistic. The packaging is made from 100% recycled and recyclable cardboard because the customer (coffee shop owner) will find this more attractive. Coffee shops already produce a lot of waste, so stash. will not add to this.
