First Studio Test Shoot

My first test shoot went surprisingly well. My main aims were just to get used to using the Grand Parade studio and the lights and experiment a bit with movement in my photography. I also wanted to test out using my medium format camera with the flash unit as it isn’t something I’ve ever tried.

I started off by looking at Richard Avedon’s fashion photography as he focused a lot on movement within his 60s work. I also just like the 60s aesthetic so wanted to further develop my skills in black and white photography.

I shot one roll of medium format film with an ISO if 125 and was extremely happy with how it came out. Every single shot bar one was exposed perfectly which is something I rarely manage. I also just love the look of them in comparison to the digital I shot alongside it, the tone of the images even though I think they are slightly more flat looking in film is just something that appeals to me and I fell like they create a slightly different mood and feeling than digital does. This is definitely something I want to pursue for the rest of my research and FMP.

I was also happy with the digitals although I always thought that this would be slightly easier as I could play around with the shutter speed, ISO and depth of field beforehand. The lighting set up was great for almost reenacting the Avedon shots and I managed to capture some interesting movement shots which im very happy with. The clothing I chose also helped this.
