In last week’s lecture I got speaking to Steph about the direction of my project, which is to look at the different stages in romantic relationships, whether that be when two people first meet, when they first realise that they love that person, how they communicate this and when the relationship ends.
My interest in creating this project is simply because these are moments that shape our lives and how we feel emotionally, but they are also the moments that no one except for the two people involved truly know the magnitude of the situation. They are the moments that have seemed to me almost impossible to photograph, simply because, how can one capture the moment that someone realises/feels something so raw and personal to them.
Steph then suggested that I look at how couple photograph each other, perhaps by giving several couples whom I know, cameras to photograph each other as they would naturally in their own environment. This is something that I have definitely considered and am currently working out how I can do this now in my given time frame.
She then suggested that I look at this issue of W magazine where Brad Pitt’s personal photographs of Angelina Jolie feature. Brad Pitt was of course approached by W magazine and asked to take the photos, not only because they were one of the most watched couples in the media but also because photography is one of Pitts favourite hobbies.
My first comment on this feature was that, the nature of how these photographs have been taken with the knowledge that they would be published in a magazine was not my only concern but also that they are both very famous, not even that they are actors but that they are used to bending their image in a certain way as they are used to being in the limelight. My goal of course is to look at relationships from a very real natural point of view, and to create meaningful images.
