From this reading I learnt about different theories of photography. I learnt that the study of signs is called semiotics. I learnt that signs and symbols are used to help the photographer and the audience understand the photographs. I also learnt that the theory of semiotics (Ferdinand De Saussure) applies to photography as well as media studies. From the reading I also looked at ‘Sense of place’ by the photographer Maria Short; I was intrigued by her story. I could clearly see the signs and symbols in her passage. I thought that overall the reading was interesting and helpful when it came to taking my own photographs.
