The birth of DE FACTO magazine
My original statement of intent detailed how I was going to create a magazine based on different cultures from around the world, with each issue focusing on a different one, and so to educate the public on diverse cultures.
After tutorials, I developed the idea further to expand on the idea of diversity in general in fashion magazines. I analysed 3 magazines of different levels – Vogue, Cosmo and Grazia – to identify their magazine proportions that represent diversity. I found that while all included race, race was featured at once all together, almost like they’ve ticked a box. Vogue was the only magazine to show 2 images featuring women of age, whilst women of different sizes were nowhere to be seen.
This led me to the idea of developing my own fashion magazine, but one that promotes and encourages diversity in fashion magazines. This is through models, writers, photographers, interviewees, etc. It will be the real magazine for real people.
I will be overseeing/doing the main editorials, but I will be commissioning out the articles and writing aspects. I already have a few ideas in mind, such as journalist Emma Gibbons, who is fantastic at interviewing. I will do a call out to the Uni and also through my personal social media platforms.
