The topic of skin colour is controversial. The beauty industry has fuelled this opinion that the lighter the skin tone, the more beautiful you are, with its long history of using white or mixed race models.
Racism in advertising due to this issue is particularly sensitive, and unfortunately is still around today. Only last month Dove created an outcry on social media after their advert showed a black woman removing her top to reveal a white woman underneath. A lot of adverts show the perception that white is better and that ‘cleaning’ yourself makes to lighter.
