Carved on a pillar is a drawing of a boat, thought to have been touched by sailors before praying to the patron saint of sailors, St Nicholas. I am always a bit sceptical about these named saints who claim to represent groups. A quick look through St Nicholas’ list and he seems to represent quite an odd spectrum of people from many walks of life/experience. I am more intrigued by the notion of drawing – touch – superstition – hope.
This would be a good place to EXHIBIT work. Will need to contact the Arts Officer for the museum. The question is what would be more appropriate – the incense boat series or the full sized finished sailing boat? Initially I thought the sailing boat but through conversation with Alison, I can see that the incense boats make more sense especially if placed near to the carvings. The connection with incense and drawing as vehicles for prayer through the symbolism of the boat.
