Guidelines for blog posts
We welcome student contributions to the English Language & Linguistics Blog.
You can post here anything language related. It might be about something you discussed in a lecture, or the findings of a project you’ve been working on, or something curious about language you’ve come across in everyday life.
Writing for the web is different from other forms of writing such as essays. People read differently online and the content needs to engage the reader quickly. Blogging is increasingly becoming a desirable digital skill. You learn how to synthesise complex ideas and write for a wider audience.
Some blogging guidelines to help get you started:
- Blog posts should ideally be between 400-600 words;
- Use informal and/or reflective language but remember who your audience is and why they may be interested in reading your post;
- Give your blog post a catchy title to engage your readers;
- Use plain English and if you use any linguistic jargon, briefly define your terms;
- Write concisely – keep sentences and paragraphs short and break up content with subheadings to make content easily digestible;
- It’s a good idea to include visual media. If you do, respect copyright and credit the source in the caption (and include a link to the source if applicable). If in doubt, always ask permission.
Happy blogging!
