Ismail Zaidy

I discovered so many incredible Moroccan artists and creatives today and it has made me so happy and has reinforced my idea that finding positive representation of Morocco is helping me really find the light and feel proud to be Moroccan.

Ismail’s work focuses on time and space but most importantly family. I read in an article on Vogue Arabia that particularly due to the pandemic that his work has become of even more importance, both the idea of being quarantined with family being a time to mend relationships, as well as being separted by the pandemic as a reason to realise the importance of family.

Ismail Zaidy is a self-taught photographer who tends to shoot on a Sansung Galaxy S5 or occasionally an iPhone 8, which is incredible and reaally inspiring. This proves that it is always the content of the work and the passion behind the piece that makes something of good quality.

I really love Zaidy’s colour palette and the imagery he creates by having hidden faces and figures. The way I interpret this is that this anonimity creates universality within the images. Also I really love the way it brings up the idea of connection between the figures and what this might mean for them. Zaidy says that he comments on people accepting and embracing differences, which I think a lot of these images are referring to.
