[:en]Sandhi Schimmel Gold has produced her work using junk mail. After studying mosaics she was trying to find a medium that allowed her to produce work that resembled that of a mosaic. She did not want to use old greeting cards and instead used the huge amount of junk mail that came through her home on a weekly bases, this is an aspect I love about this designer as she find new uses for otherwise waste materials. This closed-loop technique is something that has been continuously coming up within my research and it seems to be the most common approach to tackling the issue of environmental waste. The way this artist has been able to capture the small details in the subjects hair within figures 95 to 98 using everyday junk mail shows the talent and creativity Sandhi has to offer.

The use of vibrant colour helps bring these images to life as they really pop out of the page, I think the contours of the face helps with this aspect. Figure 96 is my favourite as the circular hues rotating around the subjects face form the focal point by drawing the viewer to his face. The amount of effort this artist has put into these pieces is evident as Sandhi Schimmel Gold would have spent a long time cutting up the tiny squares of junk mail to produce these completed designs.

The idea of creating artwork from unconventional materials is an innovative approach to creating beautiful pieces of art whist being sustainable. I want to take this approach within my future experiments.[:]
