This week, more than 4,400 University of Brighton students graduated at our ceremonies at the Brighton Centre which started on Tuesday (25 July). Students aged 19 – 79 and from over 90 countries dressed in gowns and mortarboards to collect their awards.
The School of Applied Social Science (SASS), class of 2017, took to the stage on Wednesday 26th July for the morning ceremony.
Families and friends from around the world attended and thousands more watched via the university’s livestream.
Professor Kate Bullen, Head of School, said: ‘Graduation is the opportunity to celebrate all of our students’ hard work and dedication as they make the final transition to the next stage of their journey. The Hamilton Cramp prize is agreed by the Chair of the Board in consultation with academic colleagues and is awarded for academic achievement and outstanding contribution to the school community.
Winner: Jennifer Terry, Applied Psychology and Sociology, BA(Hons)
An extract from her nomination follows;
“Jenny is an outstanding student, who consistently receives first class grades, averaging around 80% and achieved a 92 in her Dissertation. Academically, she is one of the strongest students I have ever taught. She is highly motivated and has a really excellent level of understanding and critical analytic ability. In the past three years, Jenny has participated in a number of additional academic activities, including contributing to staff research (leading to two co-authored publications). She was also awarded a BPS undergraduate fellowship in 2016.
In terms of contributing to the school community, Jenny set up the University of Brighton Psychology Society, a group which is currently thriving under her leadership. Jenny is also a fantastic team player and a motivational contributor to student discussions and group work in class. Finally, she has played a key role in student mentoring and peer assisted learning during her studies here”
“Jenny Terry should be considered because of being an exceptional student, her dissertation mark and overall mark as well as for her contributions to the Psychology Society, winner of BUDS as best presenter, further engagement in research on well-being with staff and as PASS leader, evaluating the PASS scheme for the CLT and I could go on and on…”
The Sandra Winn prize is awarded to the student who has made the greatest progress from the start to finish of the course.
WINNER: Dan Ellis, Criminology and Sociology BA(Hons) who rose from an average of 46 in level 4 to 76 in level 6, a growth of 30 marks.
The Tony Hadley prize is for the social policy student who has made the most active participation in, and contribution to, learning and teaching sessions and, thus to the learning of other students.
WINNER: Elsa Andreski, Criminology and Social Policy BA(Hons)
The British Psychological Society (BPS) prizes
2016 BPS Undergraduate prize goes to the student with the highest overall class mark
WINNER: Jennifer Terry, Applied Psychology and Sociology, BA(Hons) with an average of 82.42
The Tony Gale Memorial Prize goes to the student with best dissertation mark.
WINNER: My Eriksson, Applied Psychology and Sociology BA(Hons)
Sam Davies Sociology BA (Hons) Breakthrough Award
This is awarded to the top performing second year student on the Sociology BA(Hons) course in 16-17
WINNER: Samantha Trotman.
