Programme Leader: Dr Páraic Treacy
On behalf of the programme team, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the B.Sc. (Hons) Secondary Mathematics Education with QTS programme at the University of Brighton.
This course aims to enhance your knowledge of mathematics, understanding of teaching and learning, teaching techniques, and experience in the classroom as you progress through the course. You will be afforded opportunities to explore the nature of mathematics and how to present and explain key aspects of the subject. You will also be encouraged to identify processes and strategies which you draw on as a mathematician which you will want your pupils to develop so that they can be encouraged to be mathematicians in the classroom. Additionally, we will support you to become critically reflective thinkers, able to examine and analyse theory, policy, research and your own experiences. Learning episodes of this nature will be complemented by regular placement experiences in local secondary schools and colleges so that you may apply, develop, and refine the wide range of knowledge and skills you have developed.
We greatly value working with all our students and aim to provide a strong grounding in mathematics and mathematics education thus enabling trainees to teach the subject to a high standard in secondary education and further education settings.

Personal Academic Tutoring
The Personal Academic Tutoring scheme is designed to ensure that all students have regular opportunities to review their personal, academic and career development.
You will normally be assigned a Personal Academic Tutor at the beginning of your degree. Your personal tutor will be one of the academic staff in your school, usually someone who teaches on your course.Your Personal Academic Tutor is there to keep an eye on your overall academic and personal welfare and to advise you about other sources of help in the university such as Student Services, the Academic Study Network on Studentcentral and the Students’ Union.
You will usually get a chance to meet your tutor during induction week or soon afterwards, and will then have one or two scheduled meetings a year to review your academic progress. You can also contact your tutor whenever you need advice on any matter, or to let them know about issues affecting your work or wellbeing.
Student Support and Guidance Tutors
Student Support and Guidance Tutors (SSGTs) are an invaluable source of information and advice, working to provide relevant and timely assistance on a range of issues that might be impacting your studies.
School Office
The school office provides support with all general or admin enquiries relating to your course including student records, bursey information, and time tabling. You may also need to hand in hard copies of assessments to the school office during the academic year.
