illustration and image-making research
In regards to image-making ideas and research I immediately thought of Laura Callaghan, an illustrator known for her lighthearted, norm-breaking depictions of modern females. This comic strip style piece of work in particular works well with our magazine concept. Titled “First Date”, the narrative follows a vampy female character whose vegan date constantly puts her down throughout the evening, resulting in her murdering him by the end of the night, and then returning to her laptop to find her next ‘victim’ on another dating site. I really like the idea of telling a story through illustration in this contemporary comic style, and I love Callaghan’s limited colour palette and graphic style.
Another illustrator whose work greatly inspired me was Rachel Levit. Her monochrome, simple but striking line drawings comment “on gender, femininity and contemporary relationships”. I love the emotion and mood depicted in these illustrations which are so simple and stark but provoke a lot of thought regarding the characters and figures.
