During week 1, we were briefed on the final major project. Once I had explored the module requirements and information, I decided to take a trip to see several exhibitions and galleries in London to source some initial inspiration. As part of this process, I visited the Tate Modern, The White Cube Bermondsey and The Saatchi Gallery, exploring artists including Darren Almond, Jenny Holzer and Guillermo Calzadilla.
The work of contemporary British artist Darren Almond was presented at the White Cube. I was drawn to the work, despite not having a direct link to my own. The simplicity of his work, with the consideration of the use of space and colour felt important to me. Furthermore, the use of a variety of media within his work, including mineral paint, copper and metal leaf adds an interesting dimension to his work, particularly the way the materials reflect and absorb light. This was effective in the White Cube as the space is minimal, light and clean with its large spacious rooms and white walls, allowing the focus to be on just the art.
During my visit to these galleries and museums, I explored the use of space, colour and text predominately as they are areas I find spark initial ideas within my own work. For example, the work of Jenny Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla at the Tate Modern was something I was drawn to. The way the suspended sculpture had created shadows on the walls around the gallery space was effective. On the other hand, the work of Christine Aj Tjoe at The White Cube captured my attention. The monochrome colour palette and dramatic varied brush strokes provoke a distinctive style within the artists work. As mentioned previously, having the work displayed in the White Cube encourages the emphasis to be placed on the paintings themselves.
This was an important and beneficial visit. Despite the artists work explored not having direct links to my own creative practice, I still felt it was inspirational. Exploring creativity beyond magazines, fashion and social media is a great way to bring a more conceptual approach into my work.
