Creating work inspired by items found own online charity shops. Cowboy boots

After creating a posters as a homage to the ‘guitari’ t-shirt, I continued to look for pieces that I felt inspired by. I found a pair of yellow and pink cowboy boots that I use thought were really cute and unusual.

I had to the idea to create a piece that referenced celebrities or public figures and their iconic outfits with cowboy boots. At this point I was using a digital drawing pad to create my pieces on, with illustrator and photoshop. I would usually start pieces by hand and then scan them in and proceed to work on them digitally, but I found myself without a scanner/means of being able to transfer my work to my laptop. I have used a drawing pad before and had found it quite difficult, but I thought with time that I would find it easier, and my style would translate well.

Before I began working on this piece I had an idea of how I wanted this piece to look, the boots would be in the middle, and there would be the illustrations of celebrities surrounded the boots like a border. I wanted the colours of the piece to echo the colours of the boots. The celebrities/ characters I wanted to use were; Lil’ Was X, Billy Ray Cyrus, John Wayne, Mathew McConaughey, Clint Eastwood, James Dean, John Travolta, Jesse from Toy Story, Cher and Elizabeth Taylor. I wanted to try and get a mix of people and characters. I did want the people to be included to be well known for wearing cowboy boots and I think that this element did get slightly lost maybe, or it was too obvious and stereo typical.

I found myself spending quite a lot of time on this piece, reconsidering the layout and colours. I think my enthusiasm for the item and piece itself got lost. This is because I was only focusing on a superficial element of how the boots and those that are known for wearing them look. I also think that a few of the people I was choosing to draw weren’t really that recognisable which I need to reassess as this is one of the main elements for this piece. I was also conscious that I needed to really keep the momentum of this project up, and because I couldn’t get to a place where I was really happy with this idea that I decided to move on and start working on another idea. I think I will find it useful to research some of the history of cowboy boots, particularly of thus brand and start the piece by hand and then work on it further in photoshop.
