Project Direction Update

So, I did have quite big dip in my productivity for my FMP around the deadline for my dissertation. But after I had submitted, I began to think about my project again. I began to think about instagram and selfie culture, and thought about how popular ‘selfie murals’ or photo walls have become as a PR stunt because of the attractiveness and free promotion. Basically these walls are just photo backdrops that people can use personally, which is a real comment on everyone being a photographer and publisher, but of themselves and not of a brand.

I was thinking about how I could use this idea, but put a satirical twist on a selfie mural or Photo Booth, that communicates the hypocrisy that can be seen with online activism, while poking fun at pop-culture. This is what I wrote down as soon as the idea came to me :

“Create a satyrical piece that is meant to poke fun at pop culture, and online activism that purely remains online. I want everything I make to be designed for instagram to highlight how people value attractiveness perhaps over other things. Trying to express that it takes more than just sharing things on instagram to prevent climate change. But by creating everything for instagram, Im using that to me advantage. The work does need to portray the message that sharing things just isn’t enough, but how? Im more commenting on hypocrisy rather than vanity, but I still want to portray that I feel like maybe some people are prioritising the wrong things. “

The idea of ego over eco, using my work as a social commentary. Aside from filters and selfies, I started to think about how memes have become a representation of pop culture, by my generation being able to make fun of ourselves. In a way it think this is done to lighten the mood of how we feel about current issues we feel about social and political culture. I started making memes about climate change, as I feel that is a really good way of communicating a point in a way that doesn’t make people instantly switch off. Here are some that I’ve created already:

I think being able go communicate serious points trough a meme is how I want to proceed. I want my final piece to be able to be funny and sarcastic, so its able to be taken in a funny way, rather than feeling like a lecture?

I was watching a TEDxTalk on VR, and the speaker was saying that VR is the perfect environment to take in information, which is something i’m going to consider in my process. I think from me this could communicate to my project by making my project an experience, rather than a presentation of data.
