Reflection on Film shoot day

Today we got some really good clips and stills of model: Orlando at Hove beach for our fashion film. Though it was super cold, we managed to get Orlando in the water and out again without catching frostbite!

I am really pleased with the outcome of today, as we got a lot of content. Naturally, our concept had changed a bit whilst filming as the initial idea of having him strip off seemed to not go with the message we were trying to send. We also found that the clips we filmed of him putting on and off his clothes looked too sexual and Baywatch like rather than an abstracted clip we had hoped for. Therefore we changed how we filmed the material and clothes and used the water which created a really nice visual.

As VP I was contributing to filming shots for the film as well as behind the scenes, which I will further edit and upload to Instagram.

Self Directed Study

Today I have taught myself how to transform audio into a visualization effect in After Effects. I highly recommend this simple, easy to follow youtube video by Tutvid explaining the entire process in just under 10 minutes. He taught me how to transform sound into your desired waveform, creating a really lovely visual- for my purpose I will be using it to go alongside a video / or still image.

I decided to learn this technique after being inspired by posts from DNA magazine, whose use this visualization effect on their Instagram. The clean simple design is a perfect way of re-instating valuable interviews that camera quality doesn’t match the audio and therefore isn’t fit for posting.

Fashion Film Inspiration and Inital Thumbnails

Inspired by the Fashion Film: Allegro from Show Studio. Our proposed concept for Portall’s fashion film will be set on location of Hove Beach (however our intention is that from the imagery you cannot distinctively tell that it is there as the shots will be shot sea-facing meaning no buildings or roads will be in the frame) We want to use classical, intense music from start to finish to conflict with the young teen model whilst he dresses in clothes, using abstracted camera angles. We want to end the film with a dramatic plunge, fully clothes into the sea but this is a work in progress.

Sound Waves Experiments

These are my first two attempts at creating a soundwave to assist audio of an interview for an Instagram post. I used procreate to draw and trace snippets of the audio thinking that once it played on a timeline it would create an exact rhythm to the audio in the form of a soundwave however I was wrong and it didn’t. These are gifs I’ve inserted onto my blog, but they do move and can be seen on my online sketchbook moving.

Instagram Experiments

Whilst on the hunt to interview people in Brighton for our magazine, myself and Sophia bumped into Lottie and thought her style seemed cool so started asking her questions. From that short interview and using the clips I had got, I put together an Instagram post which could be used as a sneak peek of content that’s to come either in our magazine if we used it or just for the gram. Though the others didn’t like it so we didn’t use it for anything. But here’s a video of the edit I made which isn’t a skill I’m very confident on but am learning.

Self Directed Study

Following this video, I learnt how to add a gif on top of an image in Photoshop. Though it was very frustrating to learn at first and has taken me the whole morning, I finally managed to do it and it will be seen in the ‘coming soon’ videos I’m currently editing for the PORTALL magazine Instagram page…

Final Ident made by me

If I had fewer restrictions (COVID) then I would have liked to have got more imagery/clips in person rather than over facetime of more people and movement shots rather than just close-ups of faces to make the film more interesting with variations of scenes and camera angles. I also would have liked to incorporate people of different ages in the same clips, and filmed their interaction with one another to complement the audio and context.

Keeping Productive During a Second Lockdown Reflection

I’m finding it really hard to keep motivated since the majority of our work is online this year, especially creating content for our current editorial as were restricted on how we can carry out things that would be easy like photoshoots/interviews. It’s conflicting because you want to create something high spec like the previous year’s editorials, but with a concept like ours that is hugely people-orientated, it’s tough.

I’m the visual promoter in our team, and currently trying to think of innovative ways to get concept-related imagery to put on our Instagram. So far we haven’t got anything up and running as I’m trying to create a ‘coming soon’ short video to post first before the ident.

That’s my current state of mind – a little positive a little apprehensive a little confused on it all.
