Changes to Turnitin in My Studies (studentcentral)
For module instances created after 30th May 2022 there will be some changes to how Turnitin looks for both staff and students.
Why is the change happening?
Turnitin and My Studies are separate systems. The two systems are connected in a way that we can use Turnitin within My Studies so:
- Staff can create Turnitin assignments
- Students can submit Turnitin assignments
- Staff can Mark Turnitin assignments
- Students can access feedback
The way Turnitin currently works within My Studies is only fully supported by Turnitin until August 2022, and will not be available after December 2023.
What will change?
Module instances created on or before 30th May 2022:
There will be no change.
Module instances created after 30th May 2022
Turnitin will be fundamentally the same, but with some changes:
- Staff and students will see some different buttons on certain screens and some changes to how to access certain screens.
- Students will no longer be able to receive an email receipt of their submissions, but will able to download a receipt at the time of their submission.
- There will be some changes to some lesser-used functionality.
- There are many improvements, including clearer language.
- However, the marking process of a student submission (viewing a paper, adding quickmarks and feedback, using a rubric etc) will not change
Ultra module instances created after 30th May 2022
There will be no change. Turnitin is not available on module instances created before 30th May 2022.
Ultra module instances created after 30th May 2022
Turnitin will be available for Ultra module instances created after 30th May 2022. Turnitin will have the same look and functionality as on classic module instances created after 30th May 2022.
Further information
We plan to share more detailed information about the changes closer to the time.
Mediastream service will end on 1st July 2022
As mentioned in the eLearning Tools update from July 2021, the Mediastream service will be turned off on 1st July 2022. This is part of the move to our new video recording and streaming platform, Panopto, which is now the supported solution for lecture recording, video uploading and student submissions.
What about videos still on Mediastream?
From July 2022, any Mediastream videos linked to from My Studies, or elsewhere, will stop working.
Any videos still on Mediastream (eg. teaching materials) that are still required should be downloaded from the website and uploaded to Panopto. This page explains how.
If you have issues downloading videos you require because they are either:
- listed under the ‘General archive’ category on Mediastream (this will have occurred due to the video not being watched in over 25 months) or
- were originally created by our Central Media Services team on your behalf,
then please contact the Central Media Services team for help in accessing content.

University-wide licence to use Padlet
The university now has an institutional licence to use Padlet.
Padlet is an online notice board tool. It can be used in many ways to aid teaching, make online meetings more collaborative or for students to share their ideas with their lecturers.
Using the university’s licence, all staff and students can use Padlet to create as many Padlet boards as they wish, and share them with staff and students as well as externals.
See our Padlet page for more information about using Padlet (both staff and students have access to this page)
