Your Classroom Interaction Options

The university will shortly be ending support for Poll Everywhere Enterprise user accounts. Staff can carry on using their Poll Everywhere accounts with the free Intro level service. This allows for unlimited questions up to a maximum audience size of 25 (whereas Unlimited allows for potentially unlimited use).

What will happen to existing Poll Everywhere Enterprise accounts?

In order to carry on using your Poll Everywhere account with a free licence you need do nothing. This change will occur automatically. A free Poll Everywhere account still offers the following:

  • Incorporate Powerpoint and Keynote slides
  • Every question and activity type
  • Add images to question choices and backgrounds
  • Respond via browser, SMS or the Poll Everywhere app
  • Export data and screenshots

Note: A free Poll Everywhere account does not allow for live moderation.

Alternatives to Poll Everywhere

While the university does not currently have an all-in-one solution to replace Poll Everywhere Enterprise, the following tools may offer alternative methods to engage students.

Nearpod

We have a limited number of premium accounts available to staff who wish to use Nearpod within teaching, either live as part of a synchronous session (face-to-face or via Teams), or asynchronously using the ‘Student-paced’ feature whereby students can complete the learning object in their own time.

Nearpod allows for easy integration of PowerPoint slides. Once slides are imported you can add a range of interactive content. While not as feature-rich as Poll Everywhere in terms of question types, Nearpod does offer the following:

  • Open-ended Questions
  • Polls
  • Quizzes
  • Collaborate Board
  • Draw It
  • Matching Pairs
  • Fill in the Blanks

Nearpod offers Microsoft Teams integration and is one of the apps available to add to a Teams group. This will create a tab link to a Nearpod ‘lesson’ which can be completed by students either during a live session or at their own pace, as instructed:

Microsoft Forms

The Forms app within Microsoft Office allows for the easy creation of quizzes, surveys and polls. Within Microsoft Teams the Forms app can be added as a tab within a group:

Note: When you add a form in this way, group members will potentially be able to edit the form. An alternative option, when you add the Forms app, is to link to a pre-existing form created from within your Microsoft Forms account (access via https://office.com with your uni login email address and password). This will remove the ability for students to edit.

Forms from within Office 365 account allows for forms, surveys and quizzes. Quizzes offer the extra functionality of correct answers, points per question and response feedback (ie. automatically provide feedback depending on a students answer):

Forms, whether created from within a Teams group or within an Office 365 account, provides instant response feedback.

Kahoot

The free account option for https://Kahoot.com offers a simple quiz tool for use in a live environment. Two question types are available: multiple choice quiz and true/false. As the instructor, you would control the quiz from a device or computer and students can compete and take part using a device and a join code. This provides instant results (in the form of a leaderboard) in a fun and engaging way.
