pitch, fashion space

pitch fashion space

we all took turns to pitch our own fashion space ideas via teams chat. I found that it was very interesting to see what everyone elses own approach to the theme was, not only did it give me an insight and inspire me but it also let me gain good feedback into how i could progress my fashion space. Despite starting my pitch very undecided on my theme and idea, this was great as the feedback that i received motivated me and inspired me to create more research. some of the feedback that i received included; looking into modern day research, trying out experimentations and to try and understand who my target audience was.

the pitch helped me understand my next steps in the process to creating my fashion space.

workshops

we were given out excel sheets with different workshops that were happening in the upcoming weeks, the ones that first appealed to me were the workshops looking into a.i, virtual programs like cloud 3d and blender, as they were all aspects that i haven’t really touched upon within my work, the virtual world is very new to me and i believe that it’s something that i would find interesting to explore.

UPDATE Due to personal family problems, i had to travel home and attend funerals which meant that i wasn’t able to attend any of the work shops. however i managed to carry out independent research in my own time into these workshops that i wanted to attend.

experimenting with space

In this workshop in lesson, we were all given a medium focus in groups and we all had to come up with a fashion space resolving around our theme of future bodies. the medium focus that we were given was graphics and lines. our group had decided to create our very own crime scene based on a death by over consumption of high street fashion.

to create this space, we had two people lie on the ground whilst the other two would follow the bodies around and place electrical tape around each of the bodies, creating an outline much like a crime scene. we then placed loose fabric all over the space, to seem like the bodies were swallowed up by the fabric. for our last touches, we added crime scene cards and added cereal letters inside one of them that said ‘its a crime to be this fashionable’.

this was grey experimenting when thinking about my very own space and my limits of expression.

Year 2. Introduction to pathway projects

today in this lesson we were introduced to our new project, titled; fashion space, future bodies. I was found this title very exciting as the future is not commonly explored. within my last project, our magazine was based on future living in a sustainable future. i believe that i have touched upon some future aspects but it would be interesting to see what type of space i can create based on future bodies. I think that there’s so much that i can do with the theme, from technology to thinking about the human form and how it come develop in the future. I am very interested to see how my ideas start to develop throughout this project. I believe that my next step will be to look into artist and follow out research, whilst starting to brainstorm ideas.

website content.

As well as creating words for dvoid magazine, i also worked along side the visual promoter to help create content for the website. as shown in my sketchbook, i created plans and reflections on these pieces but due to the website not being completed and having different deadlines as the visual promoter, i am showcasing the final outcomes in my blog. for the website, i created the words and the visual promoter, visually conveyed my words throughout the website. I created 3 pieces of work for the website; 10 movies to prepare you for the future, time capsule and our impact.

The final outcome of my website listed article, 10 films to prepare you for the future. i took inspiration for the words from a dazed article that listed their favourite halloween films. i wanted to show a mixture of films based around our shared magazine theme of ‘living in the future’ adding a few conventional films that everyone can relate to and then adding a few films that people might have not had heard of such as ‘la jetee’, by keeping a different range of films it allows me to speak to a different variety of audience, not just our target audience. however as our target audience is aimed at creative gen z’s, i believe that this list is perfect for them as i feature a few experimental films in them.

In the next article featured on the website, i created an article called ‘time capsule’. the whole idea of the article is to create a virtual/online time capsule that our viewers would bring into the future with them, the items of choice has been chosen by our audience, which makes the article a bit more personal to the audience.

And finally, for the last article featured on the magazines website. I moved my impact article onto the website, where i created a video from the sound that i captured and recorded from the interview. My inspiration came from vice, and the way that would set a scene in the interview before the discussions began. For the video, i found it really challenging to create the visuals for the audio that was captured as I wished that I recorded a video around the time of the interview just so it made a bit more sense. However I overcame this challenge by speaking with the rest of my group and they all happily supplied me with videos that they had taken and with the videos, I created a montage of clips to go with the interview.

final evolution

My overall journey into Editorial Writing has been an adventure. The journey has shared its variety of ups and downs. Becoming an Editorial Writer has really made me step out my comfort zone. Writing was often a subject that i would try to avoid due to being dyslexic and a visual learner. My knowledge on Editorial Writing was just to keep it formal and bland. But as I began to look into different Editorial Writing, I learned that they could be experimental and expressive too. As an Editorial Writer, I was placed into a group of six creatives and together we formed a magazine in which we called ‘Dvoid’, meaning freeform. Dvoid Magazine is a fashion magazine and is created by the aim of keeping readers aware of the sustainable future.

For my final pieces in the magazine, I created; ‘Molly Taylor. The journey to self’ an interview based on future queer identities. ‘Hypothetical Living’ a description of a gloomy future, affected by the rising sea levels. ‘1 item 4 ways’ a sustainable styling feature. ‘Is the Future Trippy?’ main article, discussing the effects of anti-depressants and microdosing mushrooms. And lastly a diary entry, discussing the future neglect of the treasured nature.

I was overall, very pleased with the final outcome of my writing despite how challenging at times it could be. My overall favourite piece to write was my main article titled ‘Is the Future Trippy?’, this article was challenging but very rewarding to write. Thinking about the tone and set up of this article, I found it challenging. I wanted to make it seem more relaxed then scientific articles that i’d see online based on mental health, but once I spoke with my sister about her mental health, that’s when i realised that I could turn this article into something more personal and treasured to me. I enjoyed reaching out and having discussions with the people surrounding me, by finding out about their thoughts on micro dosing. I also enjoyed creating a foreign atmosphere in my ‘hypothetical living’ description piece, experimenting with tone of words to create a different world was interesting but scary. Creating a video for the hypothetical living words felt very surreal and enjoyed creating something so suspenseful but natural.

At the start of this project, I briefly had an idea of all the content that I wanted to write about for the magazine but I found that as the magazine developed and the visual content changed from the future to a sustainable future, I found myself having to change my content to fit in with the magazine, such as creating a creating a diary entry based around a foraging photoshoot that the stylist had done and then creating an sustainable article.

The one article that I struggled the most with was the ‘1 item styled 4 ways’, the stylist had created 4 looks and photographed them for the magazine and then approached me to ask for me to write words about the 4 looks. Due to it being an independent photoshoot and not given a list of items that were used in the photoshoot for the looks, I struggled a lot with this article as I couldn’t identify the one item that was being used to style the 4 different looks, to avoid confusion I asked the stylist to confirm the item and the concept behind the piece to ensure the vision was conveyed successfully in the article. The artist then confirmed that the looks had been created to promote sustainable styling in which helped me out more, as i could then base the article more on sustainable styling rather then just different looks. By simply communicating to the stylist to understand her reason of styling defiantly helped, despite the confusion of the title ‘1 item styled 4 ways’. I found that the best way to understand what she was trying to achieve with these looks were by sending her the final article and by getting her to reread it, to receive her impact.

Some other challenges that I faced was the communication in our group, I think where we were used to independently working, they wouldn’t feel the need to tell anyone about changes that had happened. for example, in my micro dosing article, someone had happened to add in ‘if you were affected by the themes mentioned in this article, head to the website for additional links and advice’, this was not reported to the people doing the website and writing, and only found out about this closer to the hand in time, I would have created a post on the website full of links to help with mental health, if i had known about it sooner. But we overcame this by speaking about the issue. I also struggled with writing in general, there was a moment where I had felt so lost and unmotivated to create more work. The work that I was creating wasn’t being read and didn’t receive much feedback from the group about what I was creating, it felt more photography based, I felt very lost and not acknowledged. But after sitting in a workshop on editorial writing and speaking with a tutor, I learned so much and so did the group. After this session, I received so much help from the art director and it was nice to have someone around to help and support my writing, it made me seem a bit more hopeful about my writing.

To help my challenging time of writing, I found that taking a break every once and while with creating videos, illustrations and mood boards really helped me to imagine what i was going to write and how i visualised it. However, if I had to do this again, I would’ve liked to looked more into a wide range of authors such as trend board writers, story writers and different diary entries. I believe that my journey could have been a bit more smoother if I had discovered more inspiration and more research.

Through out this project, I have simply enjoyed coming out my comfort zone and researching into subjects that i wouldn’t know much on. I have gained a new love for foraging just through carrying out visual research and have even been brought closer to my family and friends when discussing about the future of living. Despite our ups and downs as a group, I enjoyed working with everyone as a creative group; getting to know everyone, travelling around to different locations together, going charity store shopping and sharing ideas and concepts. I believe that we all contributed well into this magazine. Dvoid captures a bit of everyone in this magazine and I don’t think Dvoid would be the same without everyones input. This is a project in which I will keep close to my heart forever.

main article reflect

So far, I am very proud of my outcome of the development of my mental health issue with discusses micro dosing mushrooms and effects of anti-depressants. I really liked how the use of my sister in this article made it more personal to me, it was like I connected more with this article as I was writing something that truly meant a lot to me. However when I look at my draft of the mental health article, they are many things that I could change to it as I read over it.

Such as firstly, rewording the introduction, it sounds very forced to me and I want the article to seem way more relaxed and flow more within the content that I am going to speak about. However despite me disliking how forced the introduction was, I did enjoy that I used a question to end the paragraph, just because I believe it was more engaging and drew readers in. I also felt that the first stat that I used should be in bold as it is the most important thing to take away from this article, I want to highlight how important mental health is. I also believe that I could introduce my sister, Ella more to make her seem like a character that readers can relate to, I don’t want her to be a stranger.

The one thing that I am struggling the most with is making the micro dosing part of the article match the same personal tone as the anti-depressants, as I believe by matching the two tones together it could create something so personal and intriguing to read. To do this, I think by adding either more quotes or discussing with Ella on her thoughts of micro dosing, I could achieve this. And finally, I think by adding a meaningful last paragraph to round up the article would be very effective, such as maybe introducing a life lesson or something.

the dvoid team headed to an abandoned house in shoreham to produce a photoshoot based on dystopian living in the future. in this photoshoot we collaborated with a fashion design student and the students from brighton film school, creating a scene that was so mysterious. this photoshoot was extremely fun but extremely cold! it was nice to work with other people, rather then our group just to see their artist points of views on our concepts. my role in this photoshoot was just to assist with the set, sometimes helping the vp with taking bts content and then helping with lighting. i did feel like as we had so many people come to this photoshoot that my role wasn’t really needed but i still enjoyed coming and helping.

today me and the dvoid magazine group headed to a car park in brighton for a photoshoot based on cctv cameras and the virtual world of being watched. i don’t believe that this is one of our most successful shoots but it was super eventful and a bit spontaneous? the shoot didn’t feel planned as we originally were kicked out of the first location due to trespassing and a few members of the crew came very late. I enjoyed being there to support the team, my role was to help out when needed but as it was a small shoot, i wasn’t needed much. but i was very impressed with how the team handle that situation.
