fmp ideas

As i’m moving into my last few weeks until hand in and setting up my exhibition piece, i think its important to explore different outcomes and what i want to be the end goal. so far, the only ideas that i have to present my work are :

  • continuing from my formative, making a rave space with my images.
  • photobook.
  • prints of my images.

I’m in minds about how i could present work but my next steps are to experiment with different outcomes.

research so far and moving forwards

So far in my project, i have carried out research into photographers and authors such as Barbara ehnbrenreich, to understand more into my theme of rave culture and scenes surrounding in them. I found barbaras talk really interesting as she explained why do people come together and celebrate at events, and how its in human nature for people to do so. Despite my documentive photography that i’m carrying on from my research project, I wanted to step out the box and explore more into creating photoshoot, creating a festival photoshoot which explored female fashion. Pleased with this outcome, my next steps are to see if i can develop it more by experimenting with masculine fashion in festivals.

For my project wise and my end exhibition, The main ideas that i have are creating a space for people to come together and experience the atmosphere of the images, but i’d want to somehow blend my photographs with my editorial styling photographs, which i’m not too sure how to do it but i’m thinking maybe creating my own top with images and branding on, to promote being together and then possibly carrying out a photoshoot with the top.

festival female fashion shoot.

Today, I worked with Chloe the first year that i was paired with to create a photoshoot based on festival fashion. We collaborated with the styling, whilst i did the photography and chloe did the hair and make up. Previously, we had shared and created a Pinterest board featuring our inspiration for the shoot, we were inspired by styling stereotypes at festivals such as wellies and bumbags whilst wanting to create a boho chic and streetwear look, We experimenting with masculine clothing, through football tops and sorts. We worked well together, setting up a tent in my garden in windy conditions. Whilst taking photographs, Chloe would restyle garments and contribute to pose ideas. Despite the cold weather, we were still able to create a successful photoshoot that explored festival fashion.

personal research, my mums images from her scene

– mine.
One of my biggest inspirations for this project has been my mum, growing up around her photo books full of her timeless images taken at events, raves and travelling, documenting her own youth culture and soul music scene in the 80s, documenting the identities around her, she’d always have a story about every photograph. To look at my images that i have taken documenting my scene, it’s interesting to see the difference between the both, in some images, i see a similarity but in others there’s a complete difference, for example the posing is similar but the use of phone and technology that is in my photos conveys how much more my mums photographs were taken in the moment.

introduction to creating portfolio

after reading through the handbook and reading the portfolio task, i have found that this tasks seems exciting but in a way overwhelming as it seems like it will help direct us into our next big steps after university. I think the reason why i have found it a bit overwhelming is because as a creative i’m not entirely sure what i want to do after university or what route i want to follow down, having to pick one area is difficult as i love experimenting with a bit of everything. I hope the more i look into this module i can develop a more clearer view.

illness week and sota images

This week, i’ve taken a step back fro my final major project due to sickness that i caught, unfortunately being ill i had to cancel my festival themed photoshoot but am hoping to be in full recovery. Despite my illness, i had my images received back from being developed, at first i was not too sure what to think about them but the more i look at them and place them together, i like them more. i’m excited to edit them and see what types of tones i can bring through and experiment with. I’m happy with the theme of identity and happiness being shown throw these images.

setting up my formative space

Today, I started to create my own exhibition space for my formative next week. Before setting up the space, I had no idea how I wanted to present my work so far, Although i had a few ideas but the main idea was to create a space for people to view the images, and also feel the images, like an immersive space. I didn’t start with a vision but just began by printing out my rave and festival images and gathering them together on the wall, like a collage. As we are presenting our spaces next week, there’s a few things that i need to think about/add for presenting. firstly how can i create a similar environment to the images in my space? do i need to add sound? cover the floor? lighting? what should i use the other board for?

pairing up with a first year & group tutorial

Today we were paired with a first year student to assist us in our final major project, I was paired with Chloe and we had a coffee and a chat to overall get to know each other and see how we could help each other within the course. We had similar interest and she took an interest in my project so far. I learnt that Chloe was interested in make-up, hair and styling and we though it would be interesting to collaborate in future photoshoots. I hope that as the course progresses that we can help each other and i can help her as guidance as a final year student gone through first year a few years ago.

In the second half of the session, we had a group tutorial where eloise gathered everyone and gave us books to look at. The books were photography and art books that would help inspire us for our final major project. I looked at ‘Touching Photographs’ by Margaret Olin’ a cultural book that speaks about photographs that relate to people gathering and human nature, for example it touches upon 9/11. Moving forwards to my final major project, this was interesting to look into photography books and get inspiration for how i might want to present my images.

crossy at volks, capturing and scanning

Yesterday, I got my images back from a drum and bass rave that i attended. I had brought my camera with the intention of taking shots inspired by the work of Ellie Rousseau’s garms and sets. My intentions were to capture photographs of the rave community and capture the scene and environment through fashion and a mixture of portraits. I’m pleased with the outcome of these images but the scanning process was very different to how i had scanned my 35mm images in the past. Previously I had been using the photography unit’s scanner to scan through my colour negatives but they expressed that the system is more used to black and white negatives rather then colour negatives, resulting in my images to look faded and not pick up much colour. I decided that i should experiment with getting the images scanned at colour stream, which i was not disappointed by. Moving forwards in my final major project, I think it would be interesting to get my research project photographs rescanned but professionally as i believe that the images could look so different and perhaps show a different tone to the image. i’d like to also continue with the rave photography as i believe that the images are getting more stronger the more i continue with it. As for my end result, I hope to create something that features lots of photography together as a collective.

first 1 to 1 tutorial back

Today I had a one to one tutorial with eloise, we discussed my previous module and how to progress further in my start of the final major project. She introduced me to a few photographers and photography techniques, discussing how I could make my 35mm photographs stronger and experimental.

Aswell as photography, I have always been interested in styling and wanted to explore that a bit more within this module but due to sticking with my theme of rave culture and documenting, i never really had the opportunity to explore that in the previous module. With these doubts, i expressed them to elosie and she told me that despite coming up with a final major project, it was important to explore everything that you want to do, despite sticking with themes.

Moving forward in the last module, I will look into styling and how i could elevate this project and my skills within fashion communication.
