Surrealism

I have decided to look more into the theme of surrealism in order to get a clearer understanding in reflection to the image of Anna Piaggi. Surrealism is a cultural movement which was developed after the first world war in Europe, influenced largely by Dada. Dada was a avant garde movement flourished in paris in the 1920s. Dada was a mixture of all art forms, from poems, media and even politics. Surrealism’s concept was to produce and practice imagery with unnatural combinations. The art that the surrealist would make would often make you think or feel uneasy as the whole idea was to make you feel strange or like you were in a dream. The aims of a surrealist was to revolutionise human experience and change the whole perception of life. Some well known surrealism artist include : Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo and Andre Breton.
Surrealism in relation to the Anna Piaggi picture conveys the theme deeply. Within the whole image, the placement is set in such a surrealist way, the way Anna is placed and dressed as well as the expression on her face is very uneasy and unconventional compared to the images that were taken in the 80s. the image is very dreamlike and the mixture of patterns and textures convey the dream like features even more. I believe that the image of Piaggi is clearly influenced by surrealist themes, from getting the same feeling and effect that you would get if you looked at Picasso’s images.
