CARTOGRAPHERS OF INTRIGUE: DAY TWO

Day Two we got on with creating our piece! I started sewing the scraps of fabric to make the lining for the bin whilst the rest of the group finished their strings of drawings. Half an hour before the crit we made our way to the grounds of the pavilion to set up our work under a willow tree.

The piece was great fun, our group got along well and our piece was well received. I’d really like to experiment more with using material on the back of this piece, and after deciding to leave the piece in the gardens it was intriguing to think of the possibilities linked to public interaction.

Cartographers of Intrigue

Today we explored the grounds surrounding the Brighton Pavilion as the aim of our project was to map the area we looked at by gathering as much information as we could. We took photos, collected leaves and flowers, recorded what we heard with our phones and what we saw through drawing. Through this we were able to map the area through the impressions we had both as a group and as individuals.

We discussed these impressions and all came together with similar thoughts. We considered the area to be very fragmented and lacking in a clear identity. Juxtapositions lie both in the ideology of the building and its surroundings. While this can be reflective of Brighton as a whole, with its attitude of embracing all who enter, something about the area felt very paradisiacal and detached from the rest of the city.

Having looked at the displacement of large yellow ‘LITTER’ bins, we considered these to be incredibly interesting. They emphasised the presence of modern Brighton around the imperialistic architecture of the pavilion. Deciding to take one, we have since based our project around it and are attempting to make a beautiful thing contained within it. A paradise contained in modern England, filled with seagulls, pigeons and rowdy Brighton drunks.
