Inspirational workshop from Brighton & Hove Museums
We were delighted to welcome Sam Hobbs from Brighton & Hove Museums to the university.
Sam (centre in the photo above) is Head of Art at Angmering School in West Sussex and has been an art teacher for over 20 years. Alongside her school role, Sam is also Secondary Schools and Colleges Coordinator at Brighton & Hove Museums. Sam is also a recent graduate of our Fine Art MA.
Sam spoke to the student art and design teachers about herself as a practicing artist and how this informs some of her work in school as well as for the museum. She then ran a three-hour creative workshop, based on protest art, which is being piloted for secondary schools.
The workshop included stories about local people and places, with objects in the museum’s collection. Then, using the inspiration of suffragette Minnie Turner, the students created textile banners that communicated political messages of protest and activism.
The group we were able to each create an important piece of artwork, as well as appreciate the cross curricular– learning through art by also discussing issues related to society, politics and the environment in a heritage setting.
Art and Design course leader, Julie Howard said: “It was a great creative workshop for the student teachers to experience first-hand. It affirmed how powerful art can be as a vehicle and how they can use it to connect learning with their own students.
“Partnerships with museums and galleries such as Brighton & Hove Museums are hugely important in helping us to create memorable and valuable experiences for our students – the teachers of tomorrow.“
