PSHE Association accreditation for Brighton’s student teachers

Fifteen Brighton student primary teachers have gained the PSHE Association accreditation – the Certificate of Professional Development for PSHE teachers.

The students are in the second year of the Primary Education (3–7 years and Primary Education (5–11 years) BA(Hons) with QTS degrees and gained the qualification in addition to their university-based modules.

The PSHE Association is the national body for PSHE education, and supports over 60,000 teachers and schools with resources, training, guidance and advice.

The students achieved the accreditation by teaching topics such as mental health and wellbeing, bereavement, and Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Education. To gain the accreditation, they had to plan, teach and reflect upon their teaching against the PSHE Association’s 10 principles of effective PSHE education.

Faye Worthy-Pauling, Senior Lecturer in primary education said: “Completing the accreditation takes a lot of work, but the students demonstrated a thorough understanding of effective PSHE teaching in an early years and primary education setting. We couldn’t be prouder of them.”

The PSHE Association’s ITE Lead, Sarah Gabbett, told Faye: “The standard was high, which is testament to the learning and experiences which are being provided by yourself and the University.”

This is the third year running Brighton’s primary teachers have gained the PSHE Association accreditation – it is now firmly embedded in our courses to acknowledge the importance we place on the subject.

Faye chatted to the PSHE Association about her experiences of teaching PSHE at the university – listen to the interview.
