Student teachers help pupils improve with Read to Succeed
Five student primary teachers have been working with a group of pupils to improve their reading skills.
Abbie, Muhsanah, Kayleigh, Tyler-James and Kitty are second year students on our Primary Education (5–11 years) BA(Hons) with QTS degree and they delivered the Read to Succeed programme in Baird Primary and Churchwood Primary Academy in Hastings.
For six weeks the student teachers visited the schools to teach a group of pupils who were working below their expected reading age.
They delivered a series of sessions based on The Wonder Brothers – a book written by former Children’s Laureate Frank Cottrell-Boyce. The aim of the sessions was to help develop the pupils’ literacy skills and their love of reading.
At the end of the six-week programme the pupils were invited to the university’s Falmer campus to celebrate their success. Supported by the student teachers they wrote a letter to the author and made posters detailing why you should read the story. They also had a campus tour and learnt a bit about studying at university.
Practical learning is a crucial element of our teaching degrees, and we work hard to ensure our student teachers gain lots of additional practise alongside the compulsory hours of classroom experience needed to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Our graduates start their careers with knowledge and understanding of the full primary curriculum as well as confidence in their teaching ability from their many and varied practical experiences.
