Award-winning illustrator and author inspires student teachers

We were delighted to welcome Steven Lenton to the Falmer campus as the 2024-25 academic year got underway.

Steven has illustrated books for authors including David Baddiel, and his awards include Waterstones Picture Book of the Month and the Times Children’s Book of the Week.

Steven visited our first-year student primary teachers to talk about his illustrations and authorship of children’s literature.

The student teachers were tasked with copying illustrations with the winners receiving signed copies of the book.

Steven stayed for a book signing and chat with the students after his talk and was accompanied by Julie from the Book Nook who were offering discounts on the day.

Senior Lecturer Sinead Kennedy said: “Author visits really help to bring literature to life and are a great way of getting inside books aimed at younger readers.

”The student teachers couldn’t have been more inspired by the session and were stocking their shelves for the children they will be teaching on placement.”
