The PSEA scheme enables student teachers to increase their experience and understanding of teaching and learning in primary science . The scheme draws on rationale, processes and resources developed by the Primary Science Teaching Trust, the Primary Science Quality Mark, and by Stranmillis University College in Belfast.

Their thoughts on studying for the award was nothing but positive:

“Through engaging and participating in the Primary Science Enhancement Award it has supported me in being a reflective teacher, enhanced my aspiration of becoming a leader of science within my school setting in the future and developed both my subject and pedagogical knowledge. Taking my science lessons outdoors has been an area I have most enjoyed as I have not only built my confidence in knowing how to manage a challenging class outdoors but have seen the real impact it has on the children learning and engagement within the science.”

“It took me out of my comfort zone and allowed my love for the subject to grow deeper.”

Jessica Baines-Holmes, Senior Lecturer in primary science at the university, who oversaw the students said: “Our final year BA primary science subject study trainees have the opportunity to partake in the national Primary Science Enhancement Award scheme to increase their experience and understanding of teaching and learning in primary science and develop additional reflective practice.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for our trainees and something which we plan to continue. At Brighton we think it’s really important that students have lots of additional opportunities to enhance their skills.”

Christian, Abby and Ashleigh will able to start their careers with increased competence and confidence when teaching science and be equipped to take up future school leadership positions in science.
