Graduates offered paid apprenticeships

Graduates are being offered paid apprenticeships to work with people who have special educational needs and disabilities.

Downs View SEN Specialist School in Brighton is one of the first in the country to advertise externally for the Post Graduate Teacher Degree apprenticeship posts.

The school is offering the four posts in conjunction with the University and with Brighton and Hove City Council’s apprenticeships team. The apprenticeships come with a salary of £17,208 and, in addition the tuition fees are paid-for – saving each apprentice up to £9,000.

The appointments are full-time from June 2019. Applicants must be graduates and must have some experience of working with people who have special educational needs and disabilities.

The closing date for applications is midday next Monday 8 April.

Headteacher Adrian Carver and Deputy Head Teacher Rachel McDonald-Taylor in a joint statement said: “This isn’t just a fantastic offer for people wanting a career in special needs education. It’s also an exciting leap forward for us.

“By opening our apprenticeships up to people across the city, we’re hoping to tap into a huge, exciting pool of talent.”

The Downs View school is one of several which are partnering with Brighton and Hove County Council and the University to offer this new pathway that combines a teaching degree with on-the-job training, and a number of post graduate apprentices are already on this programme.

Further apprentice roles are also available in West Sussex at Steyning Grammar School.

The Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship is an opportunity for schools and academies which pay the Apprenticeship Levy to train and develop teaching staff, with expert support from the University of Brighton.

Designed by experienced educators and researchers, the apprenticeship combines workplace learning with part-time university study delivered over one year through a mix of web-based, face-to-face and independent learning.
