Observational Study Visits

As part of their first year of studies, students on the Early Childhood Education and Care BA (hons) take part in an observational study visit during the second semester.

Students will spend around 12 hours, spread over a minimum of three visits in an early years setting. During the visit they will observe children’s physical, social and emotional development as well as explore how settings work with parents and carers.

Students are encouraged to choose a setting or organisation they are most interested and passionate about. This year’s cohort will be visiting a wide variety of organisations including a hospital baby unit, nurseries, reception classes and children centres.

Julie Canavan, senior lecturer for Early Childhood and Education said: “Observational study visits are an important opportunity for students to see how the theory, they have learnt at university, can be applied in early years practice.

“Although the visits are relatively short, 12 hours in the first year and then six hours in their second, they provide time for students to practise observation skills. These opportunities allow students to experience different early year’s environments to support their understanding of the sector generally and to highlight possibilities for future employment.”
