Creating art inspired by Glyndebourne

Well done to newly qualified teachers (NQTs) Olivia Broadbent Smith and Rebecca Bleach who spent part of their summer as artist  in residence for Glyndebourne Festival as part of a collaboration with the School of Education at University of Brighton.

Both artists, who studied our (Secondary) Art and Design PGCE  kept sketchbooks throughout the festival producing final art inspired pieces which went on display to represent their time at Glyndebourne. They were given a fantastic opportunity of seeing different operas, meet with costume and set designers, prop makers and other members of the creative team.

Both Olivia and Rebecca feel they will be able to bring their experience of engaging in their own art practice forward into their teaching roles.

Olivia said “In terms of teaching practice, it has been really interesting to understand the challenges, and the barriers that you put up for yourself as a creative person, and I think that will help me relate more when I have GCSE pupils who ‘can’t do’ something. It’s going to help me to allow them to find their way through it and support them in that.”

Both artists are now in schools embarking on their teaching careers and we wish them the best of luck in their NQT year.
