BBC South-East broadcast on 13th July 2022 about our funding award from NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) and discussed the hot topic of organ donation with Anthony Clarkson, Director of Donation.
The interview highlights the urgent shortfall between donors and recipients on the organ donation waiting list, particularly within certain ethnicities such as Black, Asian, and other ethnic communities. Anthony encourages active informed consent on the Organ Donor Register along with the importance of discussing choices with family and loved ones.
We, the Donor Research Team, and Event Champions are working hard to promote a better understanding of the complexities surrounding this topic, with an emphasis on sparking conversations and dispelling misconceptions around the organ donation process and legislation.
Our Let’s Talk About It campaign and ongoing work with We Are Donors are initiatives designed to engage children and young adults, inspiring them to take the conversation home to share with family members. We expand our university engagement by running interactive workshops talking about organ donation and transplantation with first years, and we present at conferences that combine students across all healthcare disciplines IPE 2022. You can also find us at all the upcoming 2022 Freshers Fairs, where we will be proudly representing our team and offering opportunities for the fresh intake of students to come and get involved.
We’ve been busy and there’s much more to come!
