A Day to Remember: Our Experience at Brighton Freshers’ Fair
On the 28th of September 2023, our student team from the Donor Research group had an incredible opportunity to participate in Brighton Freshers’ Fair.
This event not only introduced us to the exciting world of campus activities but also shed light on the importance of organ and blood donation
Our day began early as we set up our stall at the Falmer Sports Centre on the Falmer Campus in Brighton. It was our first time being part of such an event, and a mix of excitement and nervousness coursed through our veins. Armed with pamphlets, informative displays, and welcoming smiles, we were eager to engage with our fellow students and hoped to leave a lasting impression.
At 11:00, the fair kicked off, and the venue buzzed with the energy of students eager to explore the various clubs, societies, and causes on display. It quickly became apparent that we were part of something bigger – a collective effort to make a positive impact within our community.
Our mission was crystal clear: raise awareness about organ and blood donation. It wasn’t long before fellow students started flocking to our stall, eager to hear more. Some were genuinely interested in learning, while others were seeking ways to get involved.
One aspect that particularly piqued their interest was our collaboration with NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) for the “What’s Your Blood Type?” event. The prospect of discovering their blood type and understanding its significance seemed to resonate with many students. We could see the potential of this event to educate and inspire our peers about the importance of knowing their blood type.
However, the real magic happened when we delved into the topic of blood donation. Explaining how one pint of blood could save up to many lives was a game-changer. We could sense a growing sense of responsibility and compassion in our fellow students’ eyes. What was even more heartening was the enthusiasm for organ donation. Students understood that by registering as organ donors, they had the power to offer the gift of life to someone in need. Throughout the day, we engaged in profound conversations with our fellow students. We addressed their queries, dispelled misconceptions, and shared personal stories that highlighted the significance of organ and blood donation. These interactions left us feeling inspired and optimistic about our generation’s potential to drive positive change.
Our experience at Brighton Freshers’ Fair was truly eye-opening. It reaffirmed our belief that young people are a formidable force for good, and our eagerness to contribute to vital causes, such as organ and blood donation, is indeed remarkable.
Looking ahead, we eagerly anticipate witnessing more students discovering their blood types and, hopefully, becoming blood donors at the “What’s Your Blood Type?” event, which we are organising in partnership with NHSBT. It is a step closer to creating a healthier and more compassionate world, and we take pride in being part of this journey.
