sequins + fish

On Friday the 20th I had a session with Joao completing bits of my sketchbook that weren’t finished and a tutorial with Noel. This was really helpful because all the pieces of researched I’ve done are now linked and I feel more confident in completing my zine.

I then went home and experimented more with collage and ate lots of fish. I love sequins and think this technique is very effective as photographing the collage flattens the image.

memphis

On the 20th I began researching memphis studios and their iconic, repetitive, bacteria-looking patterns. I love these because they can be any colour I choose and look very unusual. They will definitely fit the contrasting, colourful and mis-matched theme to my fanzine. I also experimented with gradients on photoshop.

The clothing brand Lazy Oaf uses memphis patterns as a source of inspiration for their clothes, including a cropped sweater I own photographed below.

I thought this clutch bag could make an interesting background when photographed up close. The bag is pale pink so I edited it in photoshop to vary the colour.

I really liked the images I used when creating digital collages so have taken more which I think I will take further and use in my fanzine, perhaps with emojis layered on top.

emoticon fruit

On Thursday the 19th I photographed lots of fruit and a plant to be used as backgrounds or layers in a collage in my webzine. I used brightly coloured card to create contrasting backgrounds that look unnatural but pleasing to the eye. I made some fruit transparent to make them easier to layer.

I took inspiration for the types of fruit I used from emojis which are currently very big in popular culture. I will also use these to layer over pages of my fanzine to add colour and an element of fun.

american apparel

On the 16th I did a photoshoot with my friend, Kit. I wanted to recreate an American Apparel style using bright clothes, muted or white backgrounds, a naturally attractive model, minimal editing and the in-built camera flash. I really like these images and think they will work well within my fanzine.

html

On the 6th I had a session with Joao on html. I’ve done quite a bit of HTML and CSS editing in the past so found it really easy, but I still learned a few things I didn’t know before so I’m really glad I attended! I plan to make the layout of my fanzine fun and interactive and innovative.

february 2nd collage

On Monday the 2nd Aaro gave use a lecture and workshop on collage which gave me lots of inspiration for collages I could create.

Here are some collages I made in the workshop from Elle Magazine cutouts. I researched Tony Oursler, Rene Magritte and Arnulf Rainer after the workshop and painted/drew over some of the collages.

alphabet

This weekend I created my own font. I started by writing my own handwriting and then adding lines and dots and curving certain parts of the letters more or less. I really like the outcome and think it wouldn’t be out of place on a font website.

I then made an alphabet out of pick n mix sweets. I worked out what shapes I needed to make each letter and then went to buy the sweets. It took a very long time and I had to clip some of them in place and leave them over night to fix in position, but the result was definitely worth it. It’s fun and colourful and I’m really happy with it!

feeling sad, dim sum + guy bourdin

For the past couple of weeks I’ve felt really down and have questioned whether I want to stay on this course or not. After my photography + styling presentation I felt very unmotivated and upset, but have made the decision to stay until the end of the year. The previous business studies project has given me the idea to start my own online clothing shop as with 20,000 followers (and counting) on tumblr, I’ll have an immediate audience to sell to.

On the 19th of January me and my friend Max travelled in to London for the class trip to the Guy Bourdin exhibition and the National Portrait Gallery. We first went for lunch at my favourite restaurant, Imperial China, and then to the exhibitions. I love the overtly sexual element to Guy Bourdin’s work and think this may be an interesting thing for me to look in to more in this project.
